Geek Actually Episode 40 – New Faces

Geek ActuallyDavid McVay is joined by Josh Philpott and Sarah Kalpokas

This week, something a little different.

David is joined by two brand new co-hosts and because this is the last audio only show we threw the rule book out the window and just had a chat about the the E3 computer game announcements. This is Josh’s speciality and his knowledge is vast. Sarah also shared her new passion for online gaming.

Josh and David then review the new comedy, The Hangover. Even though Josh confesses that he is not a huge comedy fan, this film was still received well by both. A funny film and on the strength of the trailer played on this show and the review, Sarah is now going to see it.

As always this episode carries an explicit tag due to small amounts of bad language.

Josh is obviously a radio-review prodigy. Keep Josh. His voice speaks to, not my ears, but my soul. Some people’s voices can wound my soul. But Josh’s is like sitting on a velvet cushion.

Loved the show and I have no interest in gaming whatsoever! I do love to listen though and Em is right Josh is a podcast natural. He’s definitely made it on to my Read Me a Bedtime Story list. I see in future eps maybe a ‘point counter point, Jane you ignorant …’ review thing with Sarah and Josh.

OK teaches me to prematurely commentate – Sarah is on my RMBS list too. Great new guests.

Interested in the old media/new media debate. It’s obviously a hot, hot topic on overseas podcasts but Australia seems to be blissfully unaware.

A couple of months ago I was listening to 774’s afternoon drive show and the host had to ask listeners to explain twitter to her. The next morning the am drive presenter also admitted to not knowing what it was and even scoffed at it’s utility. I thought, these are the people who should be at the cutting edge of the discussion.

I don’t think twitter will replace old media but there are certainly plenty of alternatives out there and Australia is just a bit slow to catch up. I pretty well get all my news online – no TV, no newspapers, no periodicals, radio only in the car and that’s only because the old car has no mp3 player – and I’m old!
