John Hillcoat’s Red Dead Redemption Short Film

Last week I posted a trailer for this strange little exercise in Michinima and I wasn’t quite sure what it was, now it is out and you can watch it below.

Basically John Hillcoat (director of ‘The Road’ and ‘The Proposition’) has crafted a short film only using in game elements from ‘Red Dead Redemption’ the video game. Rockstar, the company behind ‘Red Dead Redemption’, hired Hillcoat to make the film to act as a backstory for the game. The short film comes across as one giant cut scene from the game but it is fun. Here is the official synopsis of the short film:

“The 30 minute short is a glimpse inside the life of partially reformed outlaw John Marston as he journeys through the vanishing American west seeking out his former brothers in arms, all in the name of justice.  A varied cast of characters and morally ambiguous situations greet John at every turn, continuously testing his resolve and commitment.  Playing out against the modernizing frontier and the emergence of the federal government, John’s story takes him everywhere from the American west to south of the border in Mexico. Using only in-game assets and original camera work and editing, Hillcoat re-imagines the massive world of Red Dead Redemption and brings the story to a brand new audience.”

Realistically this is just one long, extended trailer for the game. If you can’t get enough Red Dead, this is for you. I’d love to hear what you thought of this, comment below.
