Henry Cavill as Superman – Really?

Okay so this news broke a few days ago and I have been sitting in stunned silence since then, Henry Cavill is signed to play Superman/Clark Kent in Zach Snyder’s new Superman movie produced by Christopher Nolan and written by David Goyer. Why? I’ve seen The Tudors and it is a good show and Henry Cavill is good in it, but it never made me think to myself, “you know that guy would be a good Superman.”

So below we have a picture of Henry Cavill in The Tudors and we have a pretty good Photoshop mockup of what Henry Cavill will look like as Superman by Ralph Damiani. As with all mockups, that isn’t Cavill’s body so we really don’t know what he will look like in the blue tights.

Well it turns out (according to /Film) that Cavill was also pretty much cast in the role when McG was attached to direct the J.J. Abrams scripted version many years ago before Bryan Singer ultimately brought us Superman Returns.

So the questions begin: Is Cavill right for the role? Considering the internet backlash against it, should anything be reused from the McG/J.J. Abrams days? Who will be cast opposite him as Lois Lane? What is the story? Who or what is the villain of the piece? And most importantly, will Superman actually get to hit something this time?

I really think Zach Snyder needs to see MegaMind as those fight scenes are what we want to see in a Superman movie, only done seriously.

Ain’t It Cool News, might be able to answer one of the questions above as they have an article about Lois Lane. Jessica Biel is apparently the front runner at the moment to play Lois Lane. She is leading the short list which also includes Kristen Stewart (if she is cast as Lois I may just have to kill myself), Malin Ackerman (enough with Ackerman already, she was fine in Watchmen but she seems to be being cast in everything at the moment), Dianna Agron (she’s not bad on Glee, but way to young and all wrong for this film) and the one I think would have been the best of this bunch, Rachel McAdams (smart, sexy, sassy and tough).

I have to say in a perfect world I would have cast Brandon Routh as Superman (he was not the problem with Singer’s Superman Returns) and Smallville’s Lois Lane, Erica Durance, this actress has grown on me and she would be a really good Lois against Routh’s Superman. Just my two cents worth, but no one listens to me :-) Here are their pictures as an illustration of how good they would look together.
