<itunes:summary>What happens when we have finished recording Film Actually and Tech Actually? This is what happens, The Geek Actually After Show! We leave the mics on and chat about anything that comes to our little geek minds. Sometimes we review another film, demonstrate a new bit of tech or just discuss the issues of the day. No rules usually means there is fun to be had, the show is unstructured, unplanned and often very amusing. Come and have some fun wednesday. Just a warning though, because we speak candidly about our topics (and love to laugh), this podcast has to carry an "explicit tag" for bad language.

*UPDATE* On July 17th we split the tech and film shows up and they are released on different days and on different feeds. You will find the two new shows by searching for Tech Actually or Film Actually here on iTunes. This feed only hosts the past episodes of The Geek Actually Podcast (prior to ep 93) and all the new episodes of The Geek Actually After Show. You can watch the the Geek Actually Shows being recorded live every Saturday at geekactually.com/live. For more information about the new shows got to geekactually.com.</itunes:summary>

Welcome to the Geek Actually After Show. This un-stuctured and un-planned podcast is what what you get after we finish recording the two main shows Tech Actually and Film Actually. We basically just leave the mics on and record whatever we feel like talking about. This show gives us a chance to talk about anything that didn't fit into the format of the main shows.

This week Calum challenges Josh's review of David Cronenberg's 'Videodrome'. This opens us up to a deep analysis of 'Videodrome' and the work of director David Cronenberg. I don't think we convinced Calum but it was a great discussion. We also discuss the science of shockwaves in Star Trek and Star Wars plus Facebook sues Teachbook.

Some Links of things we discussed:

Facebook says it owns the the term ‘Book’

Josh's review of 'Videodrome'

We basically just leave the mics on and record whatever we feel like talking about. This show gives us a chance to talk about anything that didn't fit into the format of the main shows.

This week we discuss the new trailer for 'I'm Still Here' the weird new documentary about Joaquin Phoenix's hip hop career. We talk about new images from 'The Walking Dead' TV series and casting for the new film version of 'Y The Last Man'. Because we missed last week, we have a bonus review of the film 'Salt' as well.

Some Links of things we discussed:

New Walking Dead Photos have surfaced
http://www.slashfilm.com/2010/08/18/more-photos-from-amcs-the-walking-dead/

Joaquin Phoenix’s ‘documentary’ I’m Still Here is finally here. Watch the trailer and the Letterman clip.

Feature Film Review

‘Salt’ directed by Phillip Noyce and written by Kurt Wimmer. It stars Angelina Jolie, Liev Schreiber, Chiwetel Ejiofor (pronounced chew-it-tell edge-oh-for), Daniel Olbrychski and August Diehl.

As a CIA officer, Evelyn Salt swore an oath to duty, honor and country. Her loyalty will be tested when a defector accuses her of being a Russian spy. Salt goes on the run, using all her skills and years of experience as a covert operative to elude capture. Salt's efforts to prove her innocence only serve to cast doubt on her motives, as the hunt to uncover the truth behind her identity continues and the question remains: "Who is Salt?" - source Sony

Our Verdict: Surprisingly good, Angelina Jolie delivers a powerful multilayered performance. The film is a throw back to great 90's action thrillers like 'Hunt for Red October' or 'Enemy of the State'.

This week we discuss the new trailers for 'Titanic 2' and 'Yogi Bear' (I kid you not, these are both real) plus we take a look at the leaked 'Thor' movie preview from Comic-Con. We also discuss the Taliban's plan to train monkeys to kill us and some of the juicer highlights from the recently leaked government files on Wikileaks.

Some Links of things we discussed:

The 'Titanic II' trailer

The 'Yogi Bear' trailer

The pirated Comic-Con 'Thor' preview

(If this link is dead (and let's face it, it probably is), check out our live show replay. We played the complete preview on the live show - go here to watch the replay)

Whew, we’re safe! The Taliban can’t train monkeys to shoot us.

What exactly is in those wikileak documents that has everyone so freaked out?

Welcome to the Geek Actually Podcast After Show, the show were we just leave the mics on and record whatever we feel like talking about. This show gives us a chance to talk about anything that didn't fit into the format of the main show. If this is your first experience with the Geek Actually Podcast, stop! This is not an actual show, it is the random ramblings of a bunch of geeks. Go listen to the main show first then come back to us. The Geek Actually Podcast and After Show are recorded live on Ustream.

In this week's After Show we discuss Mel Gibson's latest meltdown again, this time with the actual recording of the rant. We also talk about the films of David Cronenberg. Josh is currently catching up with old Cronenberg films and this just opens us up for discussion about a very interesting filmmaker. We then review our second film of the week, 'The Runaways'. This is a really good music biopic about Joan Jett and the all girl group of the 70's The Runaways. Well worth having a look at. Watch the trailer here. We finish the show with Neil Patrick Harris' Old Spice ad, which is a killer ad. Watch the ad here.

A reminder, this is not a proper episode of the Geek Actually podcast, this is a pretty unstructured conversation that took place after the recording of the proper show. Join us in the chat room during the recording sessions on Saturday afternoons and get your voice heard. If the after shows are popular we will continue recording them. Let us know if you enjoy (or not) the after show in the comments below or in the forum.

This week we ramble on about the cold and buying a heater, oh yeah, we also talk geek stuff like an 'Infamous 2' trailer and the career highs and lows (and there are a lot of lows) of M. Night Shyamalan. We also take a look at the teaser trailer for the new 'Smurfs' movie. Our reaction really comes down to, why? Watch the trailer here.

As always this episode carries an explicit tag due to some bad language.

Tech News

Julia Gillard is the new Prime Minister - How is this relevant to us geeks? She will be changing up the ministers for her new cabinet, there is a possibility that Stephen Conroy would be replaced as communications minister and that would be big news. The new PM is also agnostic which hopefully means that god and religion will be taken out of the rhetoric.

Film Review

‘Toy Story 3’ directed by Lee Unkrich. The film was written by Michael Arndt, John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton and Lee Unkrich. The film stars Woody, Buzz, Jessie, Mr and Mrs Potatohead, Jessie, Rex, Hamm... sorry let’s try that again. The film stars the returning voices of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Don Rickles, Estelle Harris, Wallace Shawn, John Ratzenberger, and Jodi Benson. They are joined by newcomers to the series Ned Beatty, Michael Keaton, Timothy Dalton, Whoopi Goldberg and Javier Fernandez Pena.

The Toys are back for this finale to the Toy Story tale. Now that Andy is all grown up what happens to the toys? The Attic, trash or donation. The Toys find themselves donated to a gulag, also known as a daycare centre. Adventure ensues as the toys live in a post Andy world. Watch the trailer http://www.</itunes:summary>

The Geek Actually Podcast, your weekly dose of 'the week in geek'. This week David McVay and Josh Philpott fly solo in this special pre-recorded show. Why pre-recorded? This week David, Josh and Shane are off to the pop culture expo known as Supanova (thanks to Lionel for the media passes). This week we keep the news to a minimum because it was E3 and we have a lot of information about what was on show. We then review the film 'Get Him to the Greek'. There is no after show this week but keep an eye on the site over the next week as we bring you our special Supanova coverage. Your show links follow:

Feature Review

‘Get Him To The Greek’ written and directed by Nicholas Stoller based on characters created by Jason Segel. The film stars Jonah Hill, Russell Brand, Rose Byrne, Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs, Elisabeth Moss and Colm Meaney.

This is sort of a pseudo sequel to Forgetting Sarah Marshall, a say pseudo sequel because really it is only about one of the characters from the first film which is Russell Brand’s whacked out rocker Aldus Snow. This film has Aldus, a drugged out burn out, being collected by the hapless record company intern Aaron played by Jonah Hill who has to deliver Aldus to a comeback concert at the Greek theatre in three days. The rest of the film is just a drug and alcohol fueled road movie. Watch the trailer here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckQEFV4mwIo

Our Verdict: A very funny film that on occasion misses the mark but overall succeeds. Russell Brand is hysterical and Sean 'P. Diddy' Combs is a stand out, we didn't know he had this in him. Like all Apatow productions it gets the balance between humour and heart just right. Highly recommended.

The After Show this week is a strange affair. We demo the iPad in studio and Josh, Shane and Sarah get into a very serious game of Scrabble. Unfortunately, due to a glitch with Ustream we didn't end up with a recording of the video for this show so this audio show probably won't make a lot of sense :-)

Film Review

‘The A-Team’ directed by Joe Carnahan. The film was written by Joe Carnahan, Brian Bloom and Skip Woods and is based on characters created by Frank Lupo and Stephen J. Cannell. The film stars Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Sharlto Copley, Jessica Biel, Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson, Brian Bloom and Patrick Wilson.

A remake of the classic Stephen J. Cannell action series about a group of elite soldiers who are framed for a crime they didn’t commit and now fight as freedom fighters while trying to clear their names.

The movie version ups the ante and has them involved in a CIA sting operation that involves treasury plates that would allow the bad guys to print their own money. However the film does just become the ‘They are framed and escape to catch the bad dudes and clear their names’ trope and it is pretty much what you expect from there. Trailer http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/fox/theateam/

Our Verdict: Really not as bad as we expected. It is by no means an excellent piece of cinema but if you are willing to disengage your brain and go along for the ride, it is kind of fun. It is a lot funnier than expected with Sharlto Copley stealing the film whenever he is on screen.

Film Review

‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ directed by Samuel Bayer. The film was written by Wesley Strick and Eric Heisserer based on characters created by Wes Craven. The film stars Jackie Earle Haley, Kyle Gallner, Rooney Mara, Katie Cassidy, Thomas Dekker, Kellan Lutz and Clancy Brown.

A Platinum Dunes remake of the classic 1984 Wes Craven film of the same name. The kids on Elm Street start having severe nightmares about a maniac with blades on his fingers and a burned up face.

One by one they start being killed by this demonic dream figure and when you die in his world, you die in the real world. It is up to Nancy and Kyle to find out who the mysterious killer is and why he wants them all dead before it is too late and they become the next victims.

Our Verdict: Avoid at all costs. The Platinum Dunes guys just didn't get the material and have lost any sense of what Wes Craven set out to create.

This episode carries an explicit tag due to infrequent coarse language.

The After Show this week is pretty centred on the iPad as it was released this week in Australia and we all covet it. All, that is, except Ben. Listen as we try and convince Ben that he needs one. We also go over another couple of comic book movie news pieces that we just couldn't fit into the main show. We finish up the show with a new fan film, 'Hi, I’m a Marvel… and I’m a DC: The Musical', which you can watch here. I love the musical number and felt that it was relevant to go out on this considering how much comic book movie news there was this week.

As always this episode carries an explicit tag due to some bad language.

Listen or download it here or subscribe to it on iTunes

Geek Actually is brought to you by listeners, just like you. Thanks for your contributions.

Just a reminder, if you have any comments about the episodes please leave them in the comments field below or email us at feedback@geekactually.com or send us a voicemail at 02 8011 3167. If you are an iTunes user, please leave a review as we are trying to get on the featured list and every review helps.

The Geek Actually Podcast is recorded live on Ustream every Saturday at 12pm Australian Eastern Standard Time (UTC+10). The After Show follows straight after the main show. If you still just want to listen to the audio podcast, it will go out as normal on Sunday. Want to catch up with the video but missed the show on Saturday? Search for Replay above.</itunes:summary>
