This week on Geek Actually we are joined by our very special guest Hollie McKay who is the entertainment reporter at foxnews.com. Hollie is visiting Australia for a week and we are honoured that she took the time out of her busy schedule to come and visit us in the Geek Actually studio. Hollie has to leave but just wanted to express her opinion on our feature review – She enjoyed ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and loved Helena Bonham Carter.

This week we review Tim Burton’s new film, ‘Alice in Wonderland’. Both David and Josh were completely unimpressed with the film. Visually splendid but empty. That’s two strikes (after ‘Public Enemies’) for Johnny Depp. David also gives his opinions on the 3D conversion process used for the film – it was like watching an old ViewMaster, not impressed.

Finally we take a look at the new trailer for the Jerry Bruckheimer produced ‘Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time’ directed by Mike Newell – see it here

This week we review ‘Precious – Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire’ and have mixed feelings. Pablo loves the film and feels that it worthy of the praise that is being dumped on it. Josh and David take a more centre line and feel that it is a movie of amazing moments and performances, but the film is uneven and ultimately flawed. Then we review ‘The Blind Side’, Pablo liked the football moments but wasn’t digging the rest of the film. David and Josh both liked the film and felt that it was a nice, safe and pleasant film that should be a crowd pleaser. Sandra Bullock was a joy to watch but does she really deserve an Oscar? We don’t think so.

David McVay gives us a short  history of Europa Corp. and The Digital Factory. This leads us into a feature review of their new film ‘From Paris With Love’ starring John Travolta and directed by Pierre Morel. David and Dave really enjoyed the film but recogised that it is a very silly film. Good throw back to the 1980s buddy film. Katrina was a little harder on the film suggesting that you wait for DVD.

This Week’s Feature Review: This week we review Martin Scorsese’s new thriller ‘Shutter Island’. After being delayed by 4 months, the film finally hits the screens. Was it worth the wait? A good film that has flaws. It may not be remembered as a Scorsese masterpiece but well worth a watch.

Film News: New trailer for ‘The Losers’ looks like fun, The ‘Daredevil’ reboot looks like it might be going ahead, ‘The Thing’ prequel has a director and starts casting, the ‘MacGruber’ trailer has a mixed reaction, The ‘Escape from New York’ remake gets fast tracked by New Line Cinema and Christopher Nolan is overseeing a ‘Superman’ reboot.

This Week’s Feature Review: This week we review Chris Columbus’ new family film ‘Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief’. Mixed review on this one with Dave K. enjoying the film, David M. seeing some redeeming things but over all not liking it and Josh not liking it. 10 year olds might get something out of it, but it is no Harry Potter.

This is a wonderful, charming and grown up movie that is highly recommended to all. George Clooney is pitch perfect in the role.

We discuss the life and career of the director of ‘The Terminator’, ‘Terminator 2′, ‘True Lies’, ‘Aliens’, ‘The Abyss’ and ‘Titanic’. This all leads us up to the main review of his latest film (and first in 12 years), ‘Avatar’. This is probably the cinema event of the last few years and possibly the decade. It is a must see in 3D.

Feature Reviews: This week we take a look at the career of Steven Soderbergh and review a favourite, ‘Out of Sight’ and a new one ‘The Informant!’. ‘The Infomant!’ is an enjoyable film but not Soberbergh at his best. It is well worth a look. ‘Out of Sight’ is a must rent DVD.

Stick around after the closing of the show as Nicholas ‘The Little Geek’ McVay joins David for a child’s opinion of ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs’.
