This week, Richard and David had the opportunity to chat with Kelly Sue DeConnick, the writer of Captain Marvel and Avengers Assemble (Marvel), Ghost (Dark Horse) and the upcoming Pretty Deadly (Image Comics). She is about to launch the crossover between her two Marvel titles in Avengers: The Enemy Within, which is due out on 15 May 2013.

Kelly Sue chats about the upcoming crossover, gives us a great scoop on Pretty Deadly (she had us at “butterfly and dead rabbit” narrating), talks about women in comics, sexploitation cinema and offers her opinions on the state of the industry.

We need to thank Kelly Sue for her generous time, and we hope you enjoy this insightful interview with one of the best writers in comics right now.

Robert Downey Jr, reprising his role as the millionaire industrialist turned superhero, is magnificent in this stellar sequel to Iron Man, Iron Man 2 and The Avengers. Director Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) has delivered on all the bang of the previous films but has also crafted a very personal story for Stark that is as funny and touching as it is action packed. Series regulars Gwyneth Paltrow, Jon Favreau, Don Cheadle and Paul Bettany as the voice of JARVIS are back but make no mistakes, this is Downey Jr’s film.

Set after the events of The Avengers, Stark is now in a state of post traumatic shock. He can’t sleep and is building suits like a man obsessed. His relationship with his live in love, Pepper Potts, is strained and he seems to be at breaking point. Cheadle’s War Machine armour has been re-branded as Iron Patriot to deal with a global terrorist called The Mandarin who is bent on teaching the U.S. President a lesson. Enter into this a past lover, micro-biologist Maya Hansen (Rebecca Hall) and a wronged by Stark competitor Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce) and Tony’s world is about to explode metaphorically and literally. Tony has to learn to not hide behind Iron Man but truly become Iron Man.

Black has made an interesting choice by keeping Stark out of his armour for a good percentage of the movie, making the movie about Stark’s journey and less about a suit of armour. It makes the movie more of a Tom Clancy style thriller rather than a balls to the wall slugfest. That being said, when the action is on screen it is amazing, the skydiving scene in particular is edge of the seat thrilling and the final battle rivals The Avengers.

Iron Man 3 is out now in Australian cinemas and it is a must see for fans. Those who haven’t dipped their toes in the Marvel waters yet might want to go watch Iron Man, Iron Man 2 and The Avengers before proceeding. As always with Marvel films, stay till the end of the final credits – you won’t be disappointed.

This week, Richard and David had the opportunity to speak with the legendary Chris Claremont, perhaps best known for his unsurpassed 17 year continuous run on Uncanny X-Men. We discuss in detail the first 50 issues of this historic run, including The Phoenix/The Dark Phoenix Saga, The Proteus Saga, The Hellfire Club and the isses leading all the way up to Days of Future Past.

Chris offers his opinions on the shape of the comics industry then and now, adapting the comics into films and recalls the creative process for this amazing run. We hope you enjoy listening to this frank, funny and incredibly insightful chat with a man who has not only shaped the X-Men, but modern superhero comics over the last four decades.

We need to thank Chris for his generous time and indulging our geeky questions, and we sincerely hope to catch up with him again in the future.

Find out more about Chris Claremont and purchase his e-books via ChrisClaremont.com. Chris will also be appearing at Supanova Sydney on June 21-23 Sydney Showground, Olympic Park and Perth on June 28-30 at the appropriately named Claremont Showgrounds.

<itunes:summary>This week, Richard and David had the opportunity to speak with the legendary Chris Claremont, perhaps best known for his unsurpassed 17 year continuous run on Uncanny X-Men.

Tom Cruise stars as Jack, a maintenance worker in the future after the Earth is destroyed by an alien invasion. He works with his partner making sure that the defence drones that guard the last tech on the planet stay working. As the film goes on Jack finds himself questioning his job and his existence.

Based on an unpublished graphic novel written by Kosinski, the film is intelligent and engaging, a welcome change from all the usual genre fare around. Like The Matrix, it will make you think as well as thrill you. If you dig deep you may come up with a couple of plot questions but you will soon write them off because as a whole the film is pretty tight.

Oblivion is out now in wide release. Recommended.
