Film Reviews

‘M*A*S*H’ the classic 1970 Robert Altman anti-establishment/anti-war film based on the novel ‘M*A*S*H’ by Richard Hooker and starring Donald Sutherland, Elliott Gould, Sally Kellerman and Robert Duvall. The story of life on a mobile army hospital and the character’s total disregard of authority during the Korean war. The film went on to spawn a TV series that lasted 10 years. The film was nominated for five academy awards (it won 1 for screenplay), nominated for six Golden Globes (it won best picture musical or comedy), nominated for five BATFA awards and it won the Palm d’or at Cannes. On top of that it won best director for Robert Altman at the Director’s Guild Awards. An odd little film that still delivers it’s message today even though it is showing signs of dating. Robert Altman’s style was unique and visionary, no other film was like it when it came out.

‘Green Zone’ the new film by Paul Greengrass, starring Matt Damon, Greg Kinear, Brenden Gleeson, Amy Ryan and Khalid Abdalla. The plot, on discovering the intelligence on WMD sites is false, U.S. Army Chief Miller, with the help of CIA operative Martin Brown, goes rogue to discover the truth about the invasion of Iraq. Based loosely on the book ‘Imperial Life in the Emerald City: Inside Iraq’s Green Zone’ by Rajiv Chandrasekaran. A disappointing film that plays with the facts and ultimately fails to deliver a punch in either the political intrigue or the action.

This episode carries an explicit tag due to infrequent coarse language.

This week we review Tim Burton’s new film, ‘Alice in Wonderland’. Both David and Josh were completely unimpressed with the film. Visually splendid but empty. That’s two strikes (after ‘Public Enemies’) for Johnny Depp. David also gives his opinions on the 3D conversion process used for the film – it was like watching an old ViewMaster, not impressed.

This episode carries an explicit tag due to infrequent coarse language.

Film Review

This week we review ‘Precious – Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire’ and have mixed feelings. Pablo loves the film and feels that it worthy of the praise that is being dumped on it. Josh and David take a more centre line and feel that it is a movie of amazing moments and performances, but the film is uneven and ultimately flawed. This leads us into a feature review of their new film ‘From Paris With Love’ starring John Travolta and directed by Pierre Morel. David and Dave really enjoyed the film but recogised that it is a very silly film. Good throw back to the 1980s buddy film. Katrina was a little harder on the film suggesting that you wait for DVD.

1. A US high school student sues school over privacy complaints. Says that the school used a picture taken from his laptop remotely while he was in his bedroom as evidence to him doing something naughty. Turns out all the student laptops issued from the school have remote software installed that allows them to use the camera and microphone. The school claims that it is to help locate the laptop if it is stolen. So why was it on in this kids room watching him allegedly doing something wrong?

Definitely a pass on this one. It is a ‘300′/’Gladiator’ rip off done on a mediocre TV budget. It fails on almost every level (except the gratuitous nudity).

Film News: New trailer for ‘The Losers’ looks like fun, The ‘Daredevil’ reboot looks like it might be going ahead, ‘The Thing’ prequel has a director and starts casting, the ‘MacGruber’ trailer has a mixed reaction, The ‘Escape from New York’ remake gets fast tracked by New Line Cinema and Christopher Nolan is overseeing a ‘Superman’ reboot.

This Week’s Feature Review: This week we review Chris Columbus’ new family film ‘Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief’. Mixed review on this one with Dave K. enjoying the film, David M. seeing some redeeming things but over all not liking it and Josh not liking it. 10 year olds might get something out of it, but it is no Harry Potter.
