<itunes:summary>Let's get together and geek out! Movie and TV industry analysis, news, reviews and opinion from the geek's perspective. Join David and his co-hosts Josh and Dave as we sit and gab about our great geek passions: movies, TV and the entertainment industry in general. As film geeks, we love our subject and talk passionately about our stuff. Come and have some fun and join us every weekend. Just a warning though, because we speak candidly about our topics (and love to laugh), we approach film reviewing from a "real" point of view, this podcast has to carry an "explicit tag" for bad language. Back episodes and the live feed can be found at our website, geekactually.com. If you are a gamer, make sure you also check out Dave and Josh on their dedicated gamer's show, 'Platforms'.</itunes:summary>

Welcome to the Geek Actually After Show. This un-stuctured and un-planned podcast is what what you get after we finish recording the two main shows Tech Actually and Film Actually. We basically just leave the mics on and record whatever we feel like talking about. This show gives us a chance to talk about anything that didn't fit into the format of the main shows.

This week Calum challenges Josh's review of David Cronenberg's 'Videodrome'. This opens us up to a deep analysis of 'Videodrome' and the work of director David Cronenberg. I don't think we convinced Calum but it was a great discussion. We also discuss the science of shockwaves in Star Trek and Star Wars plus Facebook sues Teachbook.

Some Links of things we discussed:

Facebook says it owns the the term ‘Book’
http://chicagobreakingbusiness.com/2010/08/facebook-says-it-owns-rights-to-the-name-book.html

Josh's review of 'Videodrome'
http://geekactually.com/2010/07/06/forgotten-films-videodrome-1983/

Star Wars scores a point in the Star Wars vs. Star Trek real tech war.

Film Actually is recorded live every Saturday at approximately 1.15pm (AEST UTC +10) at geekactually.com/live.Your show links follow:

Feature Review

‘Piranha 3D’ directed by Alexandre Aja and written by Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg based on the 1978 Roger Corman produced film ‘Piranha’ directed by Joe Dante and written by John Sayles. It stars Elisabeth Shue, Ving Rhames, Jerry O’Connell, Steven R. McQueen, Adam Scott, Christopher Lloyd, Richard Dreyfuss, Dina Meyer, Jessica Szohr, Kelly Brook and just for good measure we have porn stars Riley Steele, Gianna Michaels and Ashlynn Brooke.

Every year the population of sleepy Lake Victoria explodes from 5,000 to 50,000 for Spring Break, a riot of sun and drunken fun. But this year, there's something more to worry about than hangovers and complaints from local old timers; a new type of terror is about to be cut loose on Lake Victoria. After a sudden underwater tremor sets free scores of the prehistoric man-eating fish, an unlikely group of strangers must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food for the areas new razor-toothed residents. - source IMDB

Our Verdict: Probably the most stupid film of the year, but massively entertaining. Funny, gory and full of 3D boobies!

Watch the trailer here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mW5_4gZ0Jn4

Lists of Five

The Five Best Boob Shots in Horror Movies. I apologise in advance as this didn't seem like such a seedy idea when we thought of it.

This episode carries an explicit tag due to infrequent coarse language.

This week we discuss the new trailer for 'I'm Still Here' the weird new documentary about Joaquin Phoenix's hip hop career. We talk about new images from 'The Walking Dead' TV series and casting for the new film version of 'Y The Last Man'. Because we missed last week, we have a bonus review of the film 'Salt' as well.

Some Links of things we discussed:

New Walking Dead Photos have surfaced
http://www.slashfilm.com/2010/08/18/more-photos-from-amcs-the-walking-dead/

Joaquin Phoenix’s ‘documentary’ I’m Still Here is finally here. Watch the trailer and the Letterman clip.
http://geekactually.com/2010/08/18/trailer-im-still-here-the-infamous-joaquin-phoenix-documentary/

Feature Film Review

‘Salt’ directed by Phillip Noyce and written by Kurt Wimmer. It stars Angelina Jolie, Liev Schreiber, Chiwetel Ejiofor (pronounced chew-it-tell edge-oh-for), Daniel Olbrychski and August Diehl.

As a CIA officer, Evelyn Salt swore an oath to duty, honor and country. Her loyalty will be tested when a defector accuses her of being a Russian spy. Salt goes on the run, using all her skills and years of experience as a covert operative to elude capture. Salt's efforts to prove her innocence only serve to cast doubt on her motives, as the hunt to uncover the truth behind her identity continues and the question remains: "Who is Salt?" - source Sony

Our Verdict: Surprisingly good, Angelina Jolie delivers a powerful multilayered performance. The film is a throw back to great 90's action thrillers like 'Hunt for Red October' or 'Enemy of the State'.

Welcome to the Film Actually podcast, your weekly dose of movie geek. Film Actually is the official movie podcast of geekactually.com. This week David McVay and Josh Philpott are joined by our good friend Celine Roberts for two feature file reviews. First up we take a look at the geekfest that is 'Scott Pilgrim vs. The World' and then we take a testosterone fueled journey into Sylvester Stallone's with 'The Expendables'. We also have new trailers and a new List of Five.

Film Actually is recorded live every Saturday at approximately 1.15pm (AEST UTC +10) at geekactually.com/live.Your show links follow:

Feature Review

‘Scott Pilgrim vs. The World’ directed by Edgar Wright and written by Edgar Wright and Michael Bacall and is based on the comic series by Bryan Lee O’Malley. It stars Michael Cera, Kieran Culkin, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Ellen Wong, Alison Pill, Mark Webber, Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza and as the evil exes: Satya Bhabha, Chris Evans, Mae Whitman, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman, Keita Saitou and Shota Saito.
Scott Pilgrim's life is so awesome. He's 23 years old, in a rock band, "between jobs," and dating a cute high school girl. Everything's fantastic until a seriously mind-blowing, dangerously fashionable, roller blading delivery girl named Ramona Flowers starts cruising through his dreams and sailing by him at parties. But the path to Ms. Flowers isn't covered in rose petals. Ramona's seven evil exes stand between Scott and true happiness. Can Scott defeat all seven of the bad guys and get the girl without turning his precious little life upside-down, before the game is over? - source IMDB
Our Verdict: Complete awesomeness for Über-geeks! Highly recommended if you are willing to accept Scott's world.

Watch the trailer here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgOLmjhxVVU&feature=search

Entertainment Buzz

We take a look at the new trailer for Wes Craven’s new horror film ‘My Soul To Take’
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmByUgdi6wE

And we take a look at the new trailer for Darren Aronofsky’s new film ‘Black Swan’
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jaI1XOB-bs

Feature Film Review

‘The Expendables’ directed by Sylvester Stallone and written by Sylvester Stallone and Dave Callaham. It stars Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts, Randy Couture, Steve Austin, Mickey Rourke, Terry Crews, David Zayas, Gary Daniels, Giselle Itié and Charisma Carpenter.
Barney Ross leads the "Expendables", a band of highly skilled mercenaries including knife enthusiast Lee Christmas, martial arts expert Yin Yang, heavy weapons specialist Hale Caesar, demolitionist Toll Road and loose-cannon sniper Gunner Jensen. When the group is commissioned by the mysterious Mr. Church to assassinate the merciless dictator of a small South American island, Barney and Lee head to the remote locale to scout out their opposition. Once there, they meet with local rebel Sandra and discover the true nature of the conflict engulfing the city. When they escape the island and Sandra stays behind, Ross must choose to either walk away and save his own life - or attempt a suicidal rescue mission that might just save his soul. - source IMDB
Our Verdict: We are split, Josh and David think it is big dumb fun. A bad film that is just a whole lot of nonsense. You groan at the dialogue just as much as you cheer the explosions and violence. Celine hated it. It must be a boy thing :-)

Watch the trailer here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6RU5y2fU6s&feature=search

Lists of Five

Five 80’s Meat Head Action Films: or films that you know will lower your IQ but you can’t help but watch them.

This episode carries an explicit tag due to infrequent coarse language.

Welcome to the Film Actually podcast, your weekly dose of movie geek. Film Actually is the official movie podcast of geekactually.com. This week David McVay and Josh Philpott review the new creature feature by Vincenzo Natali 'Splice' (which opens in Australian cinemas on August 12th) and the new mini-series 'Riverworld' which is available on DVD and will be airing on Movie Extra on August 15th at 8.30pm. We also have new trailers, our entertainment buzz section and our new Lists of Five.

Film Actually is recorded live every Saturday at approximately 1.15pm (AEST UTC +10) at geekactually.com/live.Your show links follow:

Feature Review

‘Splice’ directed by Vincenzo Natali and written by Vincenzo Natali, Antoinette Terry Bryant and Doug Taylor. It stars Adrien Brody, Sarah Polley and Delphine Chanéac as Dren.

Two wide eyed gene splicing scientists are trying to create new life forms so they can harvest valuable proteins that could cure diseases. When they secretly use human DNA in an experiment the results are surprising.

Our Verdict: An intelligent, thought provoking film that falls a little short in it's last act. One of the better films to come out this year. Horror fans beware, the trailer is misleading, it is not a horror film.

'Splice' opens Thursday the 12th of August

Watch the trailer here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BE1Nl8cO6Cc

Entertainment Buzz

In Green Hornet news :-) Danny Elfman drops out... haven’t we heard this before?

Anne Rice quits Christianity

Star Wars Live Action TV Series on Hold - Costs Too Much... duh!!!

Trailer: Christina Aguilera in 'Burlesque' - Will it be 'Dream Girls' or 'Glitter'?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=liEmaDwNV18&feature=player_embedded

TV & DVD Review

‘Riverworld’ directed by Stuart Gillard and written by Robert Hewitt Wolfe, Randall M. Badat and Hans Beimler based on the books by Philip Jose Farmer. It stars Tahmoh Penikett, Mark Deklin, Peter Wingfield, Jeananne Goossen, Alan Cumming and Laura Vandervoort.

From the back of the box: Matt, an American journalist, and his fiancée, Jessie, are killed in an explosion, but Matt reawaken in a very unusual afterlife - a mysterious planet with an endless river terrain. Everyone who has ever lived on Earth has been resurrected simultaneously in this strange new world. Determined to find Jessie, Matt joins forces with an intrepid crew including a 13th century female warrior and riverboat captain Mark Twain. Embarking upriver, their adventure begins, all the while tracked by the watchful eye of a mysterious alien force.

Watch the trailer here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJfl1jwECAc

Our Verdict: Sci-Fi fans will enjoy the rich deep mythology of 'Riverworld'. It is far from perfect but it is an enjoyable romp that tries to pack a little too much into it's three hour run time.

'Riverworld' will air on Movie Extra on August 15th at 8.30pm. It is also available on DVD.

Lists of Five

Five Interesting ‘Science Gone Wrong’ movies. If you have ever asked the question “what could possibly go wrong?” in a movie then it probably fits into this category.

This episode carries an explicit tag due to infrequent coarse language.

This week we discuss the new trailers for 'Titanic 2' and 'Yogi Bear' (I kid you not, these are both real) plus we take a look at the leaked 'Thor' movie preview from Comic-Con. We also discuss the Taliban's plan to train monkeys to kill us and some of the juicer highlights from the recently leaked government files on Wikileaks.

Some Links of things we discussed:

The 'Titanic II' trailer

The 'Yogi Bear' trailer

The pirated Comic-Con 'Thor' preview

(If this link is dead (and let's face it, it probably is), check out our live show replay. We played the complete preview on the live show - go here to watch the replay)

Whew, we’re safe! The Taliban can’t train monkeys to shoot us.

This is the official tech podcast of geekactually.com. The tech show by geeks for geeks and non-geeks. Accessible tech for everyone is the motto we live by. This week on Tech Actually we talk about selfish iPad owners, legal jailbreaking, face transplants, the possible beginning of Skynet and huge Earth destroying asteroids plus much more.

Now, if you are new to Geek Actually you are probably wondering why this episode of Tech Actually is numbered 95. No, we are not insane, Tech Actually and Film Actually (our movie podcast) used to be one show called The Geek Actually Podcast and this week we split them into two shows. We kept the numbering continuity across all three of our shows (this includes Geek Actually After Show). All the information on the re-structuring of the shows can be found here at geekactually.com.

Tech Actually is recorded live on Saturdays at 12pm (AEST UTC+10). Go to geekactually.com/live to watch it live. Your show notes follow:

Welcome to the Film Actually podcast, your weekly dose of movie geek. Film Actually is the official movie podcast of geekactually.com. This week David McVay and Josh Philpott review two films, one in cinemas and one on DVD/Blu-Ray. First up is Roman Polanski's new political thriller 'The Ghost Writer' and later in the show we review the political comedy 'In The Loop' which is available on Blu-Ray and DVD. We also have new trailers, our entertainment buzz section and out new Lists of Five.

Film Actually is recorded live every Saturday at 1.15pm (AEST UTC +10) at geekactually.com/live.Your show links follow:

Feature Review

‘The Ghost Writer’ directed by Roman Polanski and written by Robert Harris and Roman Polanski. It stars Ewan McGregor, Pierce Brosnan, Olivia Williams, Jon Bernthal and Kim Cattrall. It is interesting to note that the film has a lot of small roles played by big names - keep an eye out for James Belushi, Tom Wilkinson, Timothy Hutton and Eli Wallach.

Ewan McGregor is a ghost writer hired to help a former British Prime Minister write his memoirs after the first ghost mysteriously commits suicide. When the politician finds himself embroiled in a war crimes scandal the ghost writer finds he might be in a little deep as he soon starts to unravel a mystery that could put him in mortal danger.

Our Verdict: A good but not brilliant film and should be very well received by fans of the slow pot boiler style thriller. Not Polanski's finest film but a fairly solid entry in the political thriller genre.

Blu-Ray/DVD Review

‘In The Loop’ directed by Armando Iannucci and written by Jesse Armstrong, Simon Blackwell, Armando Iannucci and Tony Roche. It is a spin off of the British TV series ‘The Thick of It’ which also featured the character of Malcolm Tucker. It stars Peter Capaldi, Simon Foster, Mimi Kennedy, Anna Chlumsky, James Gandolfini, Olivia Poulet and Gina McKee.

“The US President and UK Prime Minister fancy a war. But not everyone agrees that war is a good thing. The US General Miller doesn't think so and neither does the British Secretary of State for International Development, Simon Foster. But, after Simon accidentally backs military action on TV, he suddenly has a lot of friends in Washington, DC. If Simon can get in with the right DC people, if his entourage of one can sleep with the right intern, and if they can both stop the Prime Minister's chief spin-doctor Malcolm Tucker rigging the vote at the UN, they can halt the war. If they don't... well, they can always sack their Director of Communications Judy, who they never liked anyway and who's back home dealing with voters with blocked drains and a man who's angry about a collapsing wall.” source Loop Film Productions

Our Verdict: Brilliant political satire with the most colourful foul language we have ever heard. This is for fans of character and dialogue based British comedy like 'The Office'. Malcolm Tucker is a legendary character.

Welcome to the Film Actually podcast, your weekly dose of movie geek. Film Actually is the official movie podcast of geekactually.com. This week David McVay and Josh Philpott are joined by Calum Austin Wilson and the very quiet Shane Gregory for a review of Christopher Nolan's latest opus 'Inception'. We have reformatted the show slightly and our new Lists of Five and Movie Tidbits sections are now up and running. We also take a look at the new 'Tron Legacy' trailer for Comic-Con.

Film Actually is recorded live every Saturday at 1.15pm (AEST UTC +10) at geekactually.com/live.Your show links follow:

Feature Review

‘Inception’ Written and directed by Christopher Nolan. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, Tom Hardy, Ken Watanabe, Cillian Murphy, Marion Cotillard, and Dileep Rao and I don’t think it would be fair if we didn’t say it also features Tom Berenger, Lukas Haas and Michael Caine in smaller roles.

‘Dom Cobb is a skilled thief, the absolute best in the dangerous art of extraction, stealing valuable secrets from deep within the subconscious during the dream state, when the mind is at its most vulnerable. Cobb's rare ability has made him a coveted player in this treacherous new world of corporate espionage, but it has also made him an international fugitive and cost him everything he has ever loved. Now Cobb is being offered a chance at redemption. One last job could give him his life back but only if he can accomplish the impossible-inception. Instead of the perfect heist, Cobb and his team of specialists have to pull off the reverse: their task is not to steal an idea but to plant one. If they succeed, it could be the perfect crime. But no amount of careful planning or expertise can prepare the team for the dangerous enemy that seems to predict their every move. An enemy that only Cobb could have seen coming.’ source: Warner Bros. Pictures

Our Verdict: Excellent film, visually dazzling with a deep story that requires brain power. Highly recommended by all and Josh thinks it is the film of the year so far.

Movie Tidbits

We take a look at the career of Christopher Nolan.

Entertainment Buzz - Bits of geeky film news that caught our attention.

At last, the new 'Tron Legacy' trailer debuts at Comic-Con

Lists of Five

This week's list is : 'The Top 5 Films of the Year... So Far' - I'll give you a hint, 'Toy Story 3' and 'Inception' both rate pretty high on all our lists.

This episode carries an explicit tag due to infrequent coarse language.

This is the official tech podcast of geekactually.com. The tech show by geeks for geeks and non-geeks. Accessible tech for everyone is the motto we live by. This week on Tech Actually we talk about Mark Zuckerberg's legal woes, the RIAA's complete failure to recover lost income, Google and China reach a compromise and Australia's lack of freedoms plus much more.

Now, if you are new to Geek Actually you are probably wondering why this episode of Tech Actually is numbered 94.

Just to refresh your memories

The government wants to start recording everything you do online.

It then got revealed that the whole plan is shrouded in secrecy

This is feeling a little secret police’ish to me. I think we hve taken the ‘Nanny State’ thing too far, time to regain some sanity.

As always this episode carries an explicit tag due to some bad language.

Welcome to the new Film Actually podcast, your weekly dose of movie geek. Film Actually is the official movie podcast of geekactually.com. This week David McVay and Josh Philpott are joined by the very quiet Shane Gregory and the force of nature that is Mirren Lee to review the new Tom Cruise/Cameron Diaz film 'Knight and Day'. We also take a look at the week's geeky film news.

Now, if you are new to Geek Actually you are probably wondering why this first episode of Film Actually is numbered 93. No, we are not insane, Film Actually and Tech Actually (our tech podcast) used to be one show called The Geek Actually Podcast and this week we split them into two shows. We kept the numbering continuity across all three of our shows. All the information on the re-structuring of the shows can be found here at geekactually.com.

Film Actually is recorded live every Saturday at 1.15pm (AEST UTC +10) at geekactually.com/live.Your show links follow:

Feature Review

‘Knight and Day’ directed by James Mangold and written by Patrick O’Neill. It stars Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, Peter Sarsgaard, Viola Davis, Marc Blucas, Maggie Grace, Jordi Molla and Paul Dano.

The official synopsis: “In the sexy action-comedy Knight and Day, Tom Cruise is a covert agent sent on a mission he was never meant to complete, and Cameron Diaz is a woman caught between the agent and those he claims set him up. As their globetrotting adventure erupts into a maze of double-crosses, close escapes and false identities, they come to realize that all they can count on is each other.”

Our verdict: Avoid this incomprehensible mess at all costs. The leads are unappealing and the plotting is plodding.

Watch the trailer here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0cSz62nq9Y

This episode carries an explicit tag due to infrequent coarse language.
