Geek Actually Episode 42 – Censorship Gone Mad

Geek ActuallyDavid McVay is joined by Josh Philpott and special guest Ben Straw

Recorded live on Ustream. David and Josh are joined by Ben Straw of Ben’s Tech Show. This week we discuss the latest news on the Australian Internet Filter that now wants to expand to online gaming.

We move to film news which includes Hollywood wanting to make films based on Asteroids (the 1979 video game) and View-Master (the 1970s-1980s slide viewer toy). We also discuss Rian Johnson’s first film, Brick.

For or feature review this week, we respond to a listener request and review Waltz with Bashir, the 2008 animated documentary. This is a brilliant piece of cinema and loved by all.

As always this episode carries an explicit tag due to small amounts of bad language.

Maybe we should be preparing for the brave new world of internet censorship. The Persians have apparently been developing Firefox add-ons that circumvent internet filters. Maybe we can learn from them.

  1. Episode Correction: Throughout the censorship section I talk about the creation of a new rating for games requires the consensus of all the states Governors Generals. That is incorrect, it should be a consensus of all the states Attorneys General. Sorry about the mistake.
