Well, I think it is safe to say that I am very wary of this film. I am a huge fan of the animated series, ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ but I am not a fan of M. Night Shyamalan. I really do believe that he was a one hit wonder (and I am not talking about box office takings) with ‘The Sixth Sense’ because none of his other films have lived up to the promise shown in that film.
When the teaser trailer for ‘The Last Airbender’ was released I got mildly excited but was reminded by my co-host Josh that the trailer for ‘The Happening’ was actually okay and that brought me back to earth. The Super Bowl spot released last week got me very excited, M. Night may have gotten this right. My wife watched it (also a huge fan of the animated series) and casually responded, “Where is the humour?” Oh my god, she’s right! The animated series was, at the same time as being an epic adventure, a very funny show. M. Night has taken it all moody and dark. Wait, it was only a short TV spot. Let’s wait to see the whole trailer before we judge.
Well boys and girls, here is the full trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s version of ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’, simply called ‘The Last Airbender’ so it isn’t confused with that other little James Cameron film. Verdict? It looks good and the action set pieces look awesome. The visual effects are great, ILM has really nailed the elemental bending. However, now we can hear performances, I think the Super Bowl Spot and the Teaser were right to not include dialogue. Oh yeah, still no humour.
I will go see this film but I really am expecting to be disappointed. Quite frankly, I don’t think M. Night Shyamalan has another great film in him and I think he is completely the wrong choice of filmmaker for this product. Watch the trailer below, love to hear your comments on this one.
