A few months ago we reported on The Geek Actually Podcast that the ‘Zombieland’ writers, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, had been hired to write a draft of the ‘Deadpool’ movie and I was pretty jazzed. I haven’t read a great deal of Deadpool comics but the one thing that I can say is that it has a terrific sense of humour and these writers are just right for the job. Fox, however, doesn’t have a great track record with superhero movies and I kinda feared what they would do with this film, especially after the rough treatment they gave this character in the abysmal ‘Wolverine’ movie.
Now, /Film’s Russ Fisher is reporting that Robert Rodriguez has been offered the director’s chair. Now I am sold and completely ready for this project. Rodriguesz has one foot firmly plated in the B-movie humour (‘Planet Terror’, ‘The Faculty’ and ‘From Dusk Til Dawn’) that this project needs and he is no stranger to comic book movies, one really good comic book movie in fact (‘Sin City’ anyone?). Now he would be working from a script by Reese and Wernick! This news just makes me salivate at the possibilities. Now, if we can just get Ryan Reynolds back in the roll, I am there with my choc top in the front row!
Ryan Reynolds may be over the project as he is now shooting ‘Green Lantern’, but I really hope he does come back. It wouldn’t be the first time an actor played two different super heroes, take Chris Evans as an example (The Human Torch in ‘Fantastic Four’ and now ‘Captain America’).
I will keep an eye on this project, ‘Deadpool’ suddenly became a lot more interesting to me. Time to hit the comics.
