We already kind of knew this from previous reports but now it is official, AMC’s The Walking Dead has been renewed after only 2 episodes for a 13 episode second season.
The Walking Dead started it’s six episode first season on Halloween night with 5.3 million viewers, a record for AMC. The series is a critical and commercial success and a second season was inevitable. AMC has now issued an official press statement confirming the renewal. Here are a couple of exerpts from the press statement:
“The Dead has spread!” said Charlie Collier, President, AMC. “No other cable series has ever attracted as many Adults 18-49 as The Walking Dead. This reaffirms viewers’ hunger for premium television on basic cable. We are so proud to be bringing back The Dead again, across the globe.”
Charlie Collier went on to say:
“I wish all programming decisions were no brainers like this one,” said Sharon Tal Yguado, SVP Scripted Programming for Fox International Channels. “The Walking Dead is a TV masterpiece on so many levels. We want at least 10 seasons, if not more. Kudos to AMC!”
I’m personally very excited about this as I am a huge fan of Robert Kirkman’s original comic series and after watching the first two episodes of the new series I can honestly say that it is in good hands with Frank Darabont and Gale Anne Hurd.
Our friends over at The Movie Fan House have started a fun new podcast called ‘The Talking Deadcast’, a weekly analysis of the latest episode of the series. I had the pleasure of guesting on the first episode. Go check it out at their site moviefanhouse.com or search for it on iTunes.

When does this come out in Australia?
Loving the series at the moment. Very happy there is going to be at least another 12 episodes, but sad that there is only 2 episodes to go in this season and we have to wait until next year for the next 12. Really hoping this comes to Australia soon. After the success in America it should, just a question of which network will pick it up.
I have been reading the comics (just finished issue 54 and about to buy the next 5) and absolutely obsessed. I am hoping they continue the TV series as long at the comics. Would love to see their approach on what happens later.
