Announcement – Facebook No More

Okay, I have been pondering this for sometime because of all the privacy issues surrounding Facebook but after the recent release of past comments by Mark Zuckerberg (read the article here) and his complete contempt for the users, I am leaving Facebook.

It is a really hard decision because I use the Fan Page for promoting this site. I just find myself pondering this issue over and over again. Closing my Facebook account would probably mean that I lose contact with some old school friends that I have recently made contact with, I have family and friends that hang out there and of course there is the issue of promoting the shows. I also like occasionally playing Farmville and Cafe World, but I can live without those. People often throw up videos and stories for me for future shows and I hope they will continue to do so, you’ll just have to do it in the forum or by email or by Twitter in the future.

So I have made the decision that on May 31st, 2010 I am deleting my Facebook Pages. If anyone still wants to stay in contact with me, you can email me, follow me on Twitter or hang out in our forums. If you want Geek Actually news you can subscribe to the RSS feed (or Twitter, I tend to feed most articles there).

I have already made a section in the forum for The Unofficial Geek Actually Movie Fan Club for screening times etc.

I know this is a risky move and I hope that I don’t lose too many site visitors over this and I hope people will stay in touch about important things (like High School Reunions – yes Vicky, I am talking to you *grin*) but I just don’t support Zuckerberg and his privacy choices anymore. I hate the fact that the terms and conditions seem to change constantly and I hate that it seems that you can no longer trust Facebook with personal data.

May 31st is apparently boycott Facebook day (read here) so it felt the right day to delete my account. If Facebook radically changes it’s policies (it would probably take Mark Zuckerberg to resign) I may come back, but not at the moment. If you want to know more about all of this, read this interesting post by Jason Calacanis.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. Have you considered leaving Facebook? Have you avoided opening a Facebook account? Can you not live without Facebook? Comments below.
