What’s happening in Geek Actually land?

Time for a quick update on the coming events of GeekActually.com and The Geek Actually Podcasts. If you are a regular listener to The Geek Actually Podcast you probably already know a lot of what is going to happen in a week and a half, but just in case you haven’t ventured into our podcast world, here is the news: The podcast is going to change format at episode 93 (recording 17th July 2010).

How is it going to change? I’m glad you asked. At the moment we record two shows on Saturday, ‘The Geek Actually Podcast’ and ‘The Geek Actually After Show’, this will become three individual shows; ‘Tech, Actually’, ‘Film, Actually’ and ‘Geek, Actually’. Why? ‘The Geek Actually Podcast’ has always been a hard sell because of it’s mixed nature. As a geek, I love talking about film and tech together, it feels natural but I understand that there are a lot of people out there who don’t really care about the film stuff and just want their tech and vice versa, so this way I can get it all and the audience can get what they want as well.

A few months ago Josh, Shane and I started a little tech podcast called ‘Geek Actually Tech’. It only lasted 10 episodes but it was a great test for this breakup as the tech show has done enormous numbers and showed us that, on the most part, the audience doesn’t want their genres mixed together. Also having tech in the title made it really easy to search for in iTunes.

At the moment we record live on Ustream every Saturday and this won’t change. We start ‘The Geek Actually Podcast’ around 12pm and record for about 2 hours, then we take a short break and then record the After Show for another hour and finish between 3pm and 4pm. Under the new system we will still start at 12pm on Saturday but it will be broken down like this:

At 12 pm on Saturday we start recording ‘Tech, Actually’. The show will basically be the tech section of the current podcast spun out into it’s own show and expanded to an hour. After the show we will take a 15 minute break and then start:

At 1.15pm we will start recording ‘Film, Actually’. This is basically the film component of the current show, it will have the news and feature review that you know and love. The show will run for an hour. After this show we will take another 15 minute break and then:

At 2.30 we start recording ‘Geek, Actually’. This is our current After Show re-branded to incorporate both previous shows and is the same free for all as the current After Show. This will run for no more than an hour (often less) and that will end the whole recording session at about 3.30pm.

If you notice, the live shows are about the same length as the current live shows but it will allow people to just drop in for the stuff they want to hear about.

All of our shows are, of course, audio shows and they will now be staggered out on the feeds so you don’t get drowned in Geek Actually stuff. The ‘Film, Actually’ podcast and the ‘Geek, Actually’ After Show will go out on the normal feed as the current ‘Geek, Actually Podcast’.

The ‘Tech, Actually’ podcast will go out on the old ‘Geek, Actually Tech’ feed. If you subscribe to these feeds already, do nothing, the shows will just come out as normal. If you want to subscribe to the either of the feeds, they will be renamed with the shows for easy searching. I have also put the links at the bottom of this post for you.

The release schedule will also be slightly different: the ‘Film, Actually’ podcast will be released on the feed on Sunday (usually Saturday evening), the ‘Tech, Actually’ podcast will go out onto it’s feed on Monday and the ‘Geek, Actually’ after show podcast will go out on Wednesday as usual.

If you want to ask any questions about the changes, drop us a line at feedback@geekactually.com.

Last notes on the new shows: Breaking the shows up like this will also allow us to get in more guests. We will be able to get in different guests for the different shows. As an example, you all know guests like Mirren and Katrina didn’t enjoy the tech section, so now they will be able to come in and just do the film show. Also we will maintain the numbering continuity for all the shows – that means all three of the new shows will start at episode 93.
