Make sure you check out our other fine podcast Geek Actually for all your tech and geek culture needs.

*Update 31/07/2012 – Film Actually was a split off from the main Geek Actually show and originally maintained numbering continuity with that show. That logic no longer works as the shows have become two unique entities, so we have gone back and re-numbered the Film Actually shows to reflect their true episode number. This show is now officially episode 41 but when you listen to the show you will hear it referred to as episode 133, this is why. Sorry about any confusion or inconvenience.

Film Actually is recorded live every Saturday. Go to geekactually.com/live for the schedule and to watch it

Feature Film Review 1

‘The Hangover Part 2’ directed by Todd Phillips and written by Craig Mazin, Scot Armstrong & Todd Phillips. It stars Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifinakis, Justin Bartha, Ken Jeong, Mason Lee, Jamie Chung, Sasha Barrese, Jeffrey Tambor and Paul Giamatti.

In the follow-up to the record-breaking hit comedy The Hangover, Phil, Stu, Alan and Doug travel to exotic Thailand for Stu’s wedding. After the unforgettable bachelor party in Las Vegas, Stu is taking no chances and has opted for a safe, subdued pre-wedding brunch. However, things don’t always go as planned. What happens in Vegas may stay in Vegas , but what happens in Bangkok can’t even be imagined. – Source: joeygrass25 on IMDB

Our Verdict: A fun film that is often funny but never original. If you liked the first one, you’ll find stuff to like here. If you didn’t like the original probably best to stay away as there is nothing new on offer here.

Feature Film Review 2

‘The Tunnel’ directed by Carlo Ledesma and written by Enzo Tedeschi and Julian Harvey. It stars Bel Deliá, Andy Rodoreda, Steve Davis and Luke Arnold.

An investigation into a government cover-up leads to a network of abandoned train tunnels deep beneath the heart of Sydney. As a journalist and her crew hunt for the story it quickly becomes clear the story is hunting them. – Source: IMDB

Our Verdict: An excellent example of a low budget and effective horror/thriller. Although not perfect, it is well worth watching.

Lists of Five

This week our Lists of Five: Five Great Low Budget Films. Sometimes filmmakers get their most creative and inspired when working with zero dollars. Here are some very low budget movies that really need to be experienced.

Just a reminder, because we never like to just make things easy on ourselves, our lists are not necessarily top five lists, they are more or a less a list of film recommendations within the theme of the list.

Random Thought: Magneto’s Brotherhood

Every now and again I get a random thought and I usually keep it to myself, however I run a geek website and it occurred to me that I have a place to voice them… That in itself is a pretty random thought :-)

Okay here goes, I was reading the Wikipedia entry on Magneto (the comic book character) and it says:

He then gathered a group of angry and disillusioned mutants including his own, albeit at the time unbeknown to him, son and daughter Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch and formed the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants to further his goals.

Now I have been a Marvel reader for years and the X-Men are a particular favourite but it has never occurred to me that if Magneto believes that his motives are pure and he is in the right, why would he call his group “The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants”? Wouldn’t they just be “The Brotherhood of Mutants”? Isn’t everyone else evil to him? Am I thinking about this far too much?

“Transformers: Dark of the Moon” Will Open the 33rd Moscow International Film Festival

Our friends over at Paramount Pictures have just issued a couple of press releases. The first one is announcing that “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” is going to open the 33rd Moscow International Film Festival. This is pretty big news for Paramount Pictures and, hopefully, this means that the third film is indeed better than the second film because you would assume that the Moscow International Film Festival would have some kind of selection process. Fingers crossed.

According to Leonid Vereschagin (General Producer, MIFF), “Transformers: Dark of the Moon at the opening of the MIFF is an exception event. This is the first time the MIFF is opened not just by an American blockbuster with a Hollywood cast but by a world premiere of the film. This event will have global coverage attended by more than 150 journalists from all over the world. All this indicates the recognition of not only the MIFF but the Russian film market in general by the world film industry”.

According to the release director Michael Bay, producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Ian Bryce, as well as the film’s stars Shia LaBeouf, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Patrick Dempsey, and John Malkovich will present the film at The MIFF Opening Gala which will take place in Moscow at Pushkinsky Cinema Theater on Thursday, June 23, 2011. OH MY GOD! Watch this right now, don’t wait. This is the new trailer for “Green Lantern” that was released into the 3D cinemas. It is by far the best trailer to date and the film has just jumped into my to four most anticipated geek films of the year, behind “Super 8” and “Captain America: The First Avenger” and equal to “X-Men First Class”. Watch the trailer below.

Go watch this in HD right now at Yahoo

What did you you think of that one? I am so ready for this film now. Comments below, I want to hear your thoughts.
