Film Actually Ep039 (131) – Scream 4 and Fast Five

Hosts: David McVay & Josh Philpott

This week Josh and David got the opportunity to see a sneak peek of J.J. Abrams’ new film “Super 8” and share their opinions of what they saw. They also review a pair of franchise movies, “Scream 4” and “Fast Five”, watch and talk about some new trailers including “Iron Sky” and “Real Steel”. Plus, as if that wasn’t enough, they have a brand new Lists of Five, this week: Five Movie Franchises Worth Spending Your Time With. So, sit in a comfy chair, grab a snack and enjoy. Film Actually is the official movie podcast of geekactually.com.

*Update 31/07/2012 – Film Actually was a split off from the main Geek Actually show and originally maintained numbering continuity with that show. That logic no longer works as the shows have become two unique entities, so we have gone back and re-numbered the Film Actually shows to reflect their true episode number. This show is now officially episode 39 but when you listen to the show you will hear it referred to as episode 131, this is why. Sorry about any confusion or inconvenience.

Film Actually is recorded live every Saturday. Go to geekactually.com/live for the schedule and to watch it

Feature Film Review 1

‘Scream 4’ directed by Wes Craven and written by Kevin Williamson and Ehren Kruger based on characters by Kevin Williamson. It stars Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Hayden Panettiere, Anna Paquin and Kristen Bell.

Ten years have passed, and Sidney Prescott, who has put herself back together thanks in part to her writing, is visited by the Ghostface Killer. – Source: IMDB

Josh’s Verdict: The tries to be more clever than it is and becomes what the first film was mocking. A poor entry in the franchise and not worth cinema dollars.

Feature Film Review 2

‘Fast Five’ directed by Justin Lin and written by Chris Morgan based on characters created by Gary Scott Thompson. It stars Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges, Sung Kang, Matt Schulze, Gal Gadot and Joaquim de Almeida.

Dominic and his crew find themselves on the wrong side of the law once again as they try to switch lanes between a ruthless drug lord and a relentless federal agent. – Source: IMDB

David’s Verdict: A fun film that breaks the mold of the first film and gets away from street racing and becomes a straight action heist film. If you are an action fan this is not to be missed. Best of the series.

Lists of Five

This week’s Lists of Five: Five Movie Franchises Worth Spending Your Time With. Ever looked at a series of movies and wondered whether it was worth getting into? Maybe the first film is great and the rest are crap and you just wasted your time. David and Josh are going to give you five franchises that are worth your time watching. For sake of argument, they define franchise as a series of films with three or more films.

Just a reminder, because we never like to just make things easy on ourselves, our lists are not necessarily top five lists, they are more or a less a list of film recommendations within the theme of the list.

This episode carries an explicit tag due to infrequent coarse language.

Iron Sky Gets a New Teaser and a Release Date!

About a year ago at the SupaNova Expo we got the chance to meet the makers of the new independent sci-fi film “Iron Sky” (watch the interview here). The first teaser was fresh in everyone’s mind and these guys were just great and so generous with their time. We at Geek Actually have been excited to see this film since we first heard the premise and now the new teaser (watch it below) really highlights the dark comedy of the piece.

For those that haven’t heard about “Iron Sky”, the film is a dark satirical comedy about the Nazi’s leaving Earth in 19545 and taking up residence on the dark side of the moon. After years of plotting their revenge, they are now coming back and invading Earth. When we spoke to the director last year he said the comedy is very dark and satirical, in the vein of Kubrick’s “Dr. Strangelove”. Visually the film is looking very stylized with almost a “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow” look about it, which really works for the material.

The film is proving to be a very successful experiment as large portion of the small budget was crowd sourced. “It’s finally becoming real. I can’t wait for next April to get it out there for our fans,” said the producer of Iron Sky, Tero Kaukomaa of Blind Spot Pictures. “It’s also very nice to get the new teaser out with live action, and to continue the very successful crowd investing scheme launched at Cannes last year. That initiative is on the brink of reaching half a million euros, which makes it a major success.” Continue reading

Web Series – Mortal Kombat: Legacy – Episode 5

Okay, just the weekly update on this exciting web series produced by Warner Bros. – “Mortal Kombat: Legacy”. This is the latest episode (episode 5), find out more about the series by clicking here.

You still hanging in there? How are you enjoying this series? Comment blow.

New Trailer: Real Steel

I’ll be the first to say that I thought it was a bad idea to base a movie on the “Rock’em Sock’em Robots” and then the first trailer didn’t really set me on fire. However I did like this new trailer a little more. Now that we are seeing a little more plot and character it actually looks like it could be interesting. Apparently the producers are so excited that they have already commissioned a screenplay for a sequel. Sometimes I think you need to let the first film play before you start talking sequels. Anyway, here is the new trailer.

What did you think? Are you going to see the big robots beat the crap out of each other or does “Transformers 3” already fill that hole? Comment below.
