Geek Flick: A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

As I have said before in the Geek review for “Friday the 13th” (link) the world has become a lot more desensitized as years have passed. What would have terrified a child in the 90s is now regular viewing in some households, and films that would have genuinely scared us are now used for light relief at parties.

However, there are those few classics that manage to hold a level of horror that transcends their era and remain an uncomfortable watch no matter how old they get. Films like “Hellraiser”, “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and of course… “A Nightmare on Elm Street”. Continue reading

iPad 2 Announced

Well we knew it was coming and we pretty much new everything about it before the announcement but now it is all official. The iPad 2 will hit stores on March 11th in the United States. No word on the Australian release date yet, but Apple has set up a “be notified” page on their site so you can be one of the first to get it when it is released. Can I just say, those notification pages never seem to work and I was listed on the notifications thingy for iPad 1 and iPhone 3GS & 4 and never got any kind of advanced notification, okay gripe over.

What’s new? Slimmer and lighter design but maintaining the same screen size, this is good. My only small gripe about the iPad 1 is that it can get a little heavy when I read a lot of comics. Apple’s website also claims that the screen is now coated to resist fingerprints, if this is true, that is awesome. It has,the now standard, front and rear facing cameras for Facetime and video and still recording. It looks like the cameras are the same spec as the iPhone 4. It is now running a 1GHz duel core A5 processor and boasts that it is twice as fast as the original iPad, this is also awesome and should be fantastic for those new high-end games like Infinity Blade. Also a welcome addition to the new iPad 2 is a gyroscope, since adding this to the iPhone, games have become even more fluid and accurate. Continue reading

Film Actually Special – The Third Annual Oscar Wrap-Up Show

Welcome to our Third Annual Oscar Wrap-Up Show. Every year we watch the Oscars live (this year I live blogged it as well, read that here) and then immediately hit the studio and record our thoughts on the ceremony (the highs and the lows), the hosts and, of course, the films themselves.

This year David McVay (who is Joshless) is joined by Mirren Lee (Actor/Director/Dialect Coach/Ex-Casting Agent) and Nicholas ‘The Little Geek’ McVay to dissect the 2011 Academy Awards.

Just a quick reminder that this is a special bonus episode, the actual Film Actually podcast, hosted by David McVay & Josh Philpott,  follows a much more disciplined structure and can be found on the feed every Monday.

This episode carries an explicit tag due to infrequent coarse language.

Short Film: The Academy Awards Best Picture Nominations in lego

On the Oscar Wrap-Up special we recorded (and should be up a little later today) we played this new short film by Nicholas “The Little Geek” McVay. It his summary of the Oscar nominees done in Lego. It is really cute and pretty clever considering he hasn’t see a bunch of the films (due to age). So I have embedded it here for those that listen to the show and wonder what we are watching. Enjoy.

What you think? Cute right? Comment below.

2011 Academy Awards Live Blog – *Spoiler Alert*

We are only a couple of hours away now and I will have a live blog running right here during the ceremony. Below you will find a complete list of nominees and I will bold the winners as they happen. The live blog continues under that and it starts when the broadcast starts. Spoilers ahead for our Australian viewers as the telecast doesn’t show on free to air TV until this evening.

We will record the 3rd Annual Oscar Wrap-Up podcast directly after the ceremony. It will be live so if you want to join Mirren Lee, Nicholas ‘The Little Geek’ McVay and myself as we sum up our thoughts and opinions of the ceremony and the winners go to https://geekactually.com/live and join the chatroom. The audio version will be on iTunes (the Film Actually feed) as soon as I can get it ready.

THE LIVE BLOG IS AT THE BOTTOM

This is the movie lover’s night of nights people and like the Super Bowl (or the Grand Final here in Australia), it is not always the greatest match of the year but it is always a fun show!

Film Actually Ep029 (121) – The Looney Tunes Trope

Hosts: David McVay & Josh Philpott

This week we review the new Liam Neeson thriller “Unknown”. We also take a look at the new red band trailers for “Bad Teacher” and “Paul” in our Entertainment Buzz section and deliver a brand new Lists of Five – Five Great Thrillers. So sit back, crank up the volume, grab a cold one and enjoy. Film Actually is the official movie podcast of geekactually.com.

*Update 31/07/2012 – Film Actually was a split off from the main Geek Actually show and originally maintained numbering continuity with that show. That logic no longer works as the shows have become two unique entities, so we have gone back and re-numbered the Film Actually shows to reflect their true episode number. This show is now officially episode 29 but when you listen to the show you will hear it referred to as episode 121, this is why. Sorry about any confusion or inconvenience.

Film Actually is recorded live every Saturday. Go to geekactually.com/live for the schedule and to watch it
