Geek Actually Ep120 – The Not So Serious, Serious Show

Hosted by: David McVay & Josh Philpott

This week on the all new Geek Actually we have shoddy journalism, IBM’s Watson decimating Jeopardy, Tim Wu congratulates the NBN, Detroit gets a RoboCop statue, bacon flavoured toothpaste, geek fight club and rumour time: First of AMD for sale and second, Apple’s iPhone Nano. So sit back, grab a cold one and let’s geek out!

A new year and a new structure, Tech Actually and the Geek Actually After Show have fused like Brundlefly and been reborn simply as the all new Geek Actually. All the Tech and geek goodness that you have come to expect from the old shows wrapped up and made easier to swallow as one simple, little, tasty podcast. DeltaKnight (AKA DAvid Murray) continues to supply us with some of the geekiest stories on the web and Josh and David love to play with the tech news.

Game Review – Mass Effect 2 (PS3)

Space. The final frontier. Well, actually there’s enough movies, comics, tv series, books and video games based on space exploration that it doesn’t really seem all that “virgin territory” anymore. However, the science fiction side of role playing games is relatively untouched with only a handful actually being a successful series. The last one of note was the Star Wars : Knights of the Old Republic and, funnily enough, the same creators Bioware made a blockbuster release on 360 called Mass Effect.

Mass Effect was, and is, an amazing game that has some of the greatest story telling and gameplay substance ever known in the industry. The seamless blend of reflex bending action, emotionally charged narrative and epic choice of statistic character building really has no peer. It wasn’t completely flawless but it was as close as it could get for a fresh franchise. With the obvious success, they spawned a sequel.

Okay, I realize that Mass Effect 2 is not the newest kid on the block but it is new for the Playstation camp. 360 players have had the game for quite some time, a year in fact. So a lot of people have already gone through this title and are wondering if the ps3 version has had any tune ups. So I’ll give a run-down of the differences toward the end. Continue reading

New Trailer: Thor

We are going to discuss this on Film Actually episode 120, but here it is for you all to watch. This is the new trailer for Marvel’s “Thor”. Lots of new footage in this trailer and it even has a little humour which the first trailer was missing. I am actually starting to look forward to this film. “Thor” is out in theatres in May.

So what do you think? Comment below.

Film Actually Podcast – The Tron Special

We finally organised our time differences and lined up work schedules to bring you our new one off podcast, “Film Actually – The Tron Special”.

On the 16th of February, “Film Actually” hosts David McVay and Josh Philpott were joined by one of the hosts of the “Reel Junkies“, Fox4649 (AKA James Rogers) for an in-depth and lengthy discussion about all things “Tron” (Past, Present & Future).

We talk about our experiences watching the original  “Tron” and our feelings about that classic film. We talk about the bridging computer games era and the new sequel, “Tron Legacy”. We discuss the new film in detail including the soundtrack by Daft Punk, the visual effects and even the deep philosophical themes behind the film plus much more. We also take some time to talk about our opinions on the future of the “Tron” franchise.
