Super Bowl Trailer: Battle Los Angeles

Here they come, the Super Bowl TV spots for this year. As always the movie companies jump in and show new stuff for upcoming films. This is a new spot for the new sci-fi action film that Josh and I really want to see, “Battle: Los Angeles”.

As always, comment below.

Black Swan VFX Reel *SPOILERS*

I’m a sucker for behind the scenes videos and great special effects. The kind of special effects that are seamlessly integrated into a film and as an audience member you just accept what you are seeing on screen as real. Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan” has some wonderful effects in it and when you watch the film you know they are effects, however this curious little show reel from Fox Searchlight demonstrates how many seamless effects were also in the film. From floor clean ups, crew removals and head replacements to full blown transformations, this video covers a lot of territory and it also makes you wonder why “Black Swan” didn’t get an Oscar nomination for effects this year.

Beware: If you have not seen “Black Swan” this video spoils some of the great reveals in the film, do not watch it if you haven’t seen the film. “Black Swan” is best viewed with no advance warning to the plot or events in the film. You have been warned. Continue reading

Film Actually Ep026 (118) – Revenge of the Wasp

Hosts: David McVay & Josh Philpott

Film Actually is the official movie podcast of geekactually.com – This week David McVay and Josh Philpott review the new film, “Faster”. We also have some Entertainment Buzz including an update on “Superman: The Man of Steel”, more on Kevin Smith, casting for “The Avengers” and the trailer for “Elektra Luxx”. We also deliver a brand new Lists of Five – Five Revenge Films. So sit back, grab a snack and enjoy.

*Update 31/07/2012 – Film Actually was a split off from the main Geek Actually show and originally maintained numbering continuity with that show. That logic no longer works as the shows have become two unique entities, so we have gone back and re-numbered the Film Actually shows to reflect their true episode number. This show is now officially episode 26 but when you listen to the show you will hear it referred to as episode 118, this is why. Sorry about any confusion or inconvenience.

Film Actually is recorded live every Saturday. Go to geekactually.com/live for the schedule and to watch it

Geek Games: Psychonauts

For those that don’t read our Geek Flicks posts, a quick explanation is required. Our geek section is a vault of only the best of the best, the geek creme de la creme of films, games and tech that changed history and/or inspired us as geeks to do what we do.

These geek treasures may not be perfect, they may even be terrible in a classical sense, but they have had a resounding effect on geek culture as a whole.

When people talk about the games that define them as a gamers, the first game that comes to my mind is Psychonauts.

Tim Schafer, the producer of the game has been a hero of mine since I was old enough to cognitively understand humor and his first titles really were huge steps for storytelling in games. Unlike a lot of game developers of the time he understood the key to breaking out of the nerdy vibe of the 90s: make it universally funny. From Day of the Tentacle to Monkey Island, the humor is solid and the gameplay was accessible. They are classics of early gaming. Continue reading
