Review: Skyline (2010)

I was one of the first to say that the trailer for this film looked interesting, but then the reviews started to come in and I found that there were many other films that I would rather pay for than this one. I finally caught up with “Skyline” directed by The Brothers Strause and I have to say that it is everything that they say it is.

“Skyline” is a pretty stock standard end-of-the-world film that suffers from uninspired performances and a truly silly script. The one plus for this film is some really nicely done special effects. This isn’t surprising when the directors have a special effects background and have said, in interviews, that the film cost about $1 million dollars to shoot and then they spent $10 million on the effects. This is a silly ratio and the film may have been better if they had spent just a little more on better actors and a couple more passes on the script. Continue reading

Some Good News – No Kristen Stewart for Superman

Yesterday, I reported that Henry Cavill was cast as Superman/Clark Kent in Zack Snyder’s upcoming “Superman: The Man of Steel”. We also talked about Jessica Biel and the other possible candidates to play Lois Lane. One of the candidates in particular, Kristen Stewart almost made me gag and then have a small stroke.

Now, if you listen to Film Actually (or The Geek Actually Podcast as it was know back then) you will know that I praised Ms. Stewart’s performance in “The Runaways”, so why am I so harsh now? The issue isn’t with Kirsten Stewart as an actress (well kind of), it is more about personality. She suited the damaged and moody Joan Jett in “The Runaways”, she is completely unsuited to play the spunky, sassy, strong and confidant Lois Lane. Continue reading

Super Bowl Ad: Volkswagen

Here is another early Super Bowl ad, this one is for Volkswagen. This is so cute! I can’t wait for the game, not for the sports but for the ads. Enjoy the commercial below, if this doesn’t put a smile on your face, you’re not a real geek. Continue reading

Geek Flick: Under Siege (1992)

Weren’t the 80s – 90s a cool time for action films? It was a period where excess was an unwritten rule. CG was still barely in use meaning car crashes and explosions were usually real, action stars were damn near superhuman and the word “terrorist” was used to remove any wrong feeling from shooting people.

Yes, it was the peak of the action film genre and also Hollywood in its most un-PC. Continue reading

Super Bowl Trailer: Kung Fu Panda 2

Here they come, the Super Bowl ads. Over the next few days expect a few early releases like this teaser for “Kung Fu Panda 2”. We will probably end up with a flood of new ads after the weekend. Watch the ad below. Continue reading

Movies Revisited – Piranha 3D (2010)

We reviewed “Piranha 3D” on Film Actually a few months ago (on episode 98) and at the time I think I said that it was basically trashy fun.

The other day on my way to the screening of “Faster” I bought the Blu-Ray of “Piranha” and watching it again I have to say I had such a good time. The film is B-Grade, trashy film making with silly humour and more boobs and gore than you can poke a stick at and it is so watchable! Director Alexandre Aja directed this film like it was much more important than it is and this benefits the film. He obviously loved the material and didn’t just walk through it, he put his heart into it. Continue reading
