Henry Cavill as Superman – Really?

Okay so this news broke a few days ago and I have been sitting in stunned silence since then, Henry Cavill is signed to play Superman/Clark Kent in Zach Snyder’s new Superman movie produced by Christopher Nolan and written by David Goyer. Why? I’ve seen The Tudors and it is a good show and Henry Cavill is good in it, but it never made me think to myself, “you know that guy would be a good Superman.”

So below we have a picture of Henry Cavill in The Tudors and we have a pretty good Photoshop mockup of what Henry Cavill will look like as Superman by Ralph Damiani. As with all mockups, that isn’t Cavill’s body so we really don’t know what he will look like in the blue tights. Continue reading

Leo Laporte is Expanding to a New Studio – I’m So Jealous

As anyone who listens to my shows will know, I am a huge Leo Laporte fan. Leo is the reason I started podcasting over two years ago and I really admire what he has built in Petaluma, California. Well, he has outgrown the TWiT Cottage and has signed the lease on this monster building. I so want to go and see this facility when it is all complete.

Below you’ll find a video of an early building walkthrough that Leo made of his new facility. If I can get The David Storms America Tour happening, you can sure as hell bet I want to see this place when it is up and running in May. Continue reading

First Thoughts – Faster (2010)

For the last few years Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has been languishing in family film hell. The former wrestler was once the great hope for action fans and had starred in “The Rundown” (2003) (AKA “Welcome to the Jungle” in Australia), “The Scorpion King” (2002) and “Doom” (2005). In 2005 he proved he had great comic timing when he starred in “Be Cool” as a gay bodyguard. Over the last few years, tough man ‘The Rock’ gave way to gentle Dwayne as he starred in “Get Smart” (2008), “Race to Witch Mountain” (2009) and “The Tooth Fairy” (2010). Each time though, he played a parody of the tough guy we actually wanted to see. His last film, “The Other Guys” (2010) he did it again.

So, finally we get to see the ass kicking action star back in “Faster” directed by George Tillman Jr. But was it worth the wait? Damn straight! The Rock is back and he is meaner and tougher than ever as a wronged ex-con out for revenge. And he is the best thing in this dumb movie. Continue reading

Retro Review: Barton Fink (1991)

The story on this film is that while Joel and Ethan Coen were writing “Miller’s Crossing” (1990) they hit a massive case of writer’s block. To help them get past this they wrote this little film about a writer with writer’s block. It must have worked, because they resumed work on “Miller’s Crossing” and it is arguably one of the finest mob films ever made.

So what about “Barton Fink”? With their script in hand, they followed “Miller’s Crossing” by making their little experiment. The story, on the surface, sounds simple – New York in 1941, a successful playwright, Barton Fink, who writes plays about the common man, gets taken out to Hollywood to write motion pictures. He moves into a run down hotel and gets his first assignment, write a Wallace Beery wrestling picture. From his first day in Hollywood, Barton is struck by a doozy of a case of writer’s block. He believes that he is needed in New York and he has sold out to Hollywood. His room is hot and dingy, and his neighbour, Charlie the insurance salesman, is a loud over bearing and he is being eaten alive by mosquitoes every night. Continue reading

Film Actually Ep025 (117) – Four Walling

Hosts: David McVay & Josh Philpott

Film Actually is the official movie podcast of geekactually.com – This week David McVay and Josh Philpott review the new film from the Coen Brothers, “True Grit”. We also have some Entertainment Buzz including our thoughts on the Kevin Smith announcement and the Oscar nominations. We also deliver a brand listener requested Lists of Five – Five Great Westerns. So sit back, grab a snack and enjoy.

*Update 31/07/2012 – Film Actually was a split off from the main Geek Actually show and originally maintained numbering continuity with that show. That logic no longer works as the shows have become two unique entities, so we have gone back and re-numbered the Film Actually shows to reflect their true episode number. This show is now officially episode 25 but when you listen to the show you will hear it referred to as episode 117, this is why. Sorry about any confusion or inconvenience.

Film Actually is recorded live every Saturday. Go to geekactually.com/live for the schedule and to watch it
