Kevin Smith Announces His Distribution Plans for Red State

There is a lot of hate aimed at Kevin Smith at the moment and I am not entirely sure why. Okay I understand why distribution companies and movie studios might be a little pissed, let’s face it they don’t like it when you rock the boat or threaten their income flows. Okay, I could even understand why the critics are mad, Kevin Smith has point blank said there will be no advertising campaign for the film, which by definition means no press junket, which means no exclusives.

What am I talking about? Kevin Smith (director of “Clerks”, “Chasing Amy” & “Dogma”) premiered his new film “Red State” at Sundance yesterday and caused a frenzy when he announced that he was going completely independent with this film and he would distribute the film himself by taking the film on a Q&A roadshow across the country and then eventually releasing the film independently on October 19th. This date is significant  as it is the anniversary of the release of “Clerks” seventeen years ago. Continue reading

Quick Review – Toy Story 3

I saw “Toy Story 3” twice in 3D at the cinema, reviewed it on the podcast Film Actually and listed it as one of my five favourite films of 2010, so I am not sure what more I can say about it here, but I’ll try anyway.

My son and I pulled out the Blu-Ray today and re-watched what I think is one of the finest films of the year. Charming, touching and heart breaking are all words that can be used to describe Pixar’s third, and reportedly final, film in this utterly charming series.

Andy is now a grown up and the toys (lead by Tom Hanks and Tim Allen) are a little lost. They are loyal to Andy, but he doesn’t play with them anymore. Now with Andy going to College, he has a choice, throw them away or put them in the attic. As he is preparing them for the attic, his mother mistakenly thinks they are trash. After they escape, the toys believe that they are destined for the trash heap so they donate themselves to a daycare centre where their nightmare, and new adventure, is about to begin. My Year with Movies – A Mission

We’ve mentioned it on the podcast, Film Actually, for the past two weeks I know, but now I have the site all up to date and ready to go, so I thought I’d share it here with those that don’t listen to the show (why aren’t you listening?).

I have started a simple Tumblr blog called “My Year with Movies” to track every film I watch this year. I did consider just doing it here but I didn’t want to flood this site with a million little encapsulated comments on films that some of you won’t even care about. Why am I doing this? Good question, let’s see if I can explain. Continue reading

Quick Review – Tangled

Just got back from watching “Tangled”, Disney’s 50th animated film. The film is a re-telling of the classic fairytale Rapunzel in glorious computer animation.

I was sceptical going into this film, I was worried that it would be schmaltzy and overly sweet which, with the exception of the Disney/Pixar films, is kind of a trademark of Disney animated fair. I was wrong, “Tangled’ is an utterly charming and funny film and I understand why it has been so successful at the box office.

The story is a classic one, a princess with magic hair that can heal and reverse ageing is kidnapped as a baby and raised by a wicked old hag in secret tower so she can use the hair to keep herself young. Rapunzel dreams of leaving the tower and on her 18th birthday meets a young rogue who stumbles into her tower. With the help of the rogue she leaves her imprisonment and her adventure and new life begins.

Film Actually Ep024 (116) – Sensurround 70mm Smell-O-Rama 3D

Hosts: David McVay & Josh Philpott

Film Actually is the official movie podcast of geekactually.com – This week David McVay and Josh Philpott review two new films, “The Green Hornet” and “Black Swan”. We also have some Entertainment Buzz including news about Ridley Scott’s “Alien” prequel and the coming of Smell-O-Rama. We also deliver a brand new Lists of Five – Five Films About Insanity. So sit back, grab a snack and enjoy.

*Update 31/07/2012 – Film Actually was a split off from the main Geek Actually show and originally maintained numbering continuity with that show. That logic no longer works as the shows have become two unique entities, so we have gone back and re-numbered the Film Actually shows to reflect their true episode number. This show is now officially episode 24 but when you listen to the show you will hear it referred to as episode 116, this is why. Sorry about any confusion or inconvenience.

Film Actually is recorded live every Saturday. Go to geekactually.com/live for the schedule and to watch it
