Teaser Trailer: Kevin Smith’s “Red State”

“Red State” is probably my most anticipated film of the year. I have been following this film very closely for months now and I think it is going to be amazing. Just in case you haven’t been paying attention, Kevin Smith has directed a new thriller/horror film called “Red State”. Yes you read that right, Kevin “Silent Bob” Smith has moved into a very different genre and I for one think it will be brilliant. I am a huge fan of Mr. Smith’s since “Clerks” and have wanted to see him stretch and work outside of his comfort zone for a few years now. Now I finally get to see him try something a little new and different for him.

Want to know more about “Red State”? Then you should really listen to his podcast “Red State of the Union”, you can find it on iTunes. It is a weekly podcast all about the making of this film and very funny in places too.

Sit back and check out this haunting trailer. Continue reading

Trailer: The Mechanic (Red Band)

Remake Alert! Okay, now that is out of the way, this actually looks pretty hot. Charles Bronson was never one of my favourite action stars, he was pretty wooden and, in my opinion, not in the same league as other 70’s action icons Clint Eastwood or Steve McQueen. That being said, I liked the original “The Mechanic” (AKA “Killer of Killers”) but it wasn’t a favourite.

Flash forward to now and Simon West has directed a remake with Jason ‘badass of the decade’ Statham and Ben Foster. Simon West’s action credentials are solid with “Con Air” and the first of the “Tomb Raider” films under his belt. He also directed the pilot of TV’s “Human Target”. The cast and director plus a pretty solid source should equal some interesting ass kicking.

Be aware that this is the Red Band trailer for “The Mechanic” and as such should be considered NSFW.

“The Mechanic” is due for release January 28th in the States but no release date for Australia is set yet according to IMDB. Continue reading

Game Review – Castlevania: Lords of Shadow (Xbox & PS3)

I love games that come out where I can gloat and say “I told you so”. Usually it’s when a game gets hyped up and I tell everyone it’s gunna be crap. This time around however, it’s the other side of the same coin. I’ve been telling everyone to get their hands on this new Castlevania game (Castlevania: Lords of Shadow) and everyone that has taken the leap and gotten it have all said the same thing : THIS GAME IS AWESOME!

The Castlevania series stretches back to 1986 on the original NES and has since spawned 26 games with a majority of them being good titles. Funnily enough, the famously terrible ones are the 3D ones so when a new Castlevania for Ps3 and 360 was announced, hopes were not high. That is until Konami, the makers of the game, mentioned that Kojima productions were involved in it’s creation. For those who don’t know, Kojima is responsible for the Metal Gear series and some of the greatest storytelling in gaming history. This truly would be a match made in heaven.

What we have here is a gothic combat adventure with a bit of platforming puzzles and one epic storyline and an ending to make you scream for a sequel. Continue reading

Geek Actually After Show Ep113 – All Powered Up and Nothing to Wear

Hosted by: David McVay & Josh Philpott

Welcome to the Geek Actually After Show. This week on the un-stuctured, no rules, geeky after show podcast that we call Geek Actually we have Cyber War news, lonely man iPhone apps, Christmas lights and a meatball deathstar. That is what what you get when you get a few geeks together after we finish recording the two main shows, Tech Actually and Film Actually. We run through DeltaKnight’s geekiest links of the week. Basically we leave the microphones on and record whatever we feel like talking about. This show gives us a chance to talk about those things that didn’t fit into the format of the main shows. It’s all in good geeky fun – Think of it as your ‘Week in Geekdom’. This is the final episode of The After Show for the year and in it’s current form, on January 8th, 2011 the all new Geek Actually will be born. It will be all the geek you’ve come expect and a little tech news for good measure. Merry Christmas (or happy holidays) to all of our listeners and have a great and safe new year.

The Geek Actually After Show is recorded live on Saturdays around 2.30 to 3pm (AEST UTC+10) depending on how long the main shows go. Go to geekactually.com/live to watch it live.
