REPLAY – Geek Actually Live Shows for October 23rd

Here are this week’s live shows presented in the same order that we recorded them. We start with Tech Actually then Film Actually and end the day with the After Show.

Because the show is live, you get it here with all the mistakes intact. Check the individual audio show posts for the show notes. This week in Tech Actually, David & Josh report on two big events: The Nokia N8 launch and the Apple October announcement. In Film Actually David, Josh and Celine review ‘The Town’, look over the weeks entertainment news and give our lists of great heist movies. In this week’s Geek Actually After Show we geek out over a bunch of links sent in by listener DeltaKnight including the football sized sandwich called The Big Fat Ugly. Enjoy the shows.

The Geek Actually podcasts are recorded live every Saturday from 12pm (AEDST) or UTC +11 at geekactually.com/live Continue reading

Film Actually Ep013 (105) – The Big Heist

Hosts: David McVay, Josh Philpott & Celine Roberts

Welcome to the Film Actually podcast, your weekly dose of movie geek. Film Actually is the official movie podcast of geekactually.com.

This week David McVay and Josh Philpott are  joined by Celine Roberts for a review of Ben Affleck’s new film ‘The Town’. We also have some Entertainment Buzz and a brand new List of Five. This week’s List is five great heist films.

*Update 12/11/2011 – Film Actually was a split off from the main Geek Actually show and originally maintained numbering continuity with that show. That logic no longer works as the shows have become two unique entities, so we have gone back and re-numbered the Film Actually shows to reflect their true episode number. This show is now officially episode 13 but when you listen to the show you will hear it referred to as episode 105, this is why. Sorry about any confusion or inconvenience.

Film Actually is recorded live every Saturday at approximately 1.15pm (AEST UTC +10) at geekactually.com/live

The Nokia N8 Australian Launch Event

Yesterday Josh and I attended the Nokia Launch event for the new N8, Nokia’s new flagship product. Before we go on I have to stress that this is not a full review for the phone itself as I am currently testing the phone and I will post the full review of the handset in a few days. This article is about the event itself and a few preliminary thoughts on the new N8 as seen at the event.

It was a fairly small event, a surprise as I thought it would have been a much larger affair considering that Nokia still commands such a large market share of the mobile market. At a rough guess I would say that there were about thirty journalists etc there and this brings me to the first problem, only four chairs. Yes, you read that right, four chairs. It was a standing event which made taking notes and shooting pictures/video a little difficult. This was a little badly planned in my opinion. Secondly the two speakers, Nokia Australia chief Emile Baak and product demonstrator Stephen Wright, seemed to lack enthusiasm. Say what you like about Steve Jobs, there is no denying he is a consummate public speaker. Jobs can get up in front of a crowd and talk about any product and we all want to buy it. The Nokia spokespeople didn’t sell me on the phone. The presentation was all a little ho-hum. Continue reading

Geek Actually After Show Ep104 – Ankling

Hosted by: David McVay, Josh Philpott & Shane Gregory

Welcome to the Geek Actually After Show. This un-stuctured and un-planned podcast is what what you get after we finish recording the two main shows Tech Actually and Film Actually. We basically just leave the mics on and record whatever we feel like talking about. This show gives us a chance to talk about anything that didn’t fit into the format of the main shows.

The Geek Actually After Show is recorded live on Saturdays around 2.30pm (AEST UTC+10). Go to geekactually.com/live to watch it live.

Review: Let Me In

Are you sick of vampires yet?

While I would say yes, 2008’s “Let the Right One In” came as a refreshing surprise to the world. Here we had an intelligent, poignant tale about two kids dealing with something horrible. Subtly horrific and heart wrenching by the end, “Let the Right One In” is and will always be one of the best vampire films ever made.

Now why on earth would you choose to remake that? Assuming the studio plans to milk an audience who would not typically make the effort to see a foreign film, then “Let Me In” does exactly what they set out to achieve.

But you shouldn’t see it. Continue reading
