Review: Time Crimes (Los Cronocrímenes)

Over my last few reviews I have been on the war path about story and script writing. Given that my last reviews where “The Last Airbender” and “Resident Evil: Afterlife” I feel genuinely justified in my harsh calls but it’s easy to attack films and harder to award solid praise. So I decided to pick a film that does story so perfectly that it almost begs you to try find a holes in it’s logic.

Time Crimes is one of those films that is always only one or two friends away from you. Everyone who is a fan of cinema will have at least one friend that has seen it or owns it and it was no different for me. The name had popped up so many times that when my eyes stumbled over it shelved at my local JB HIFI I decided it was time to see what all the fuss was about. Continue reading

Shane Gregory is our regular co-host on Tech Actually and the tech guy for DLC Live every Tuesday at rawDLC.com.

*Update 12/11/2011 – Film Actually was a split off from the main Geek Actually show and originally maintained numbering continuity with that show. That logic no longer works as the shows have become two unique entities, so we have gone back and re-numbered the Film Actually shows to reflect their true episode number. This show is now officially episode 12 but when you listen to the show you will hear it referred to as episode 104, this is why. Sorry about any confusion or inconvenience.

Film Actually is recorded live every Saturday at approximately 1.15pm (AEST UTC +10) at geekactually.com/live

For Love Of The Game Episode 3 – The Collector’s Edition

Littered around my room, I have dozens, literally dozens, of collector’s and limited editions of games. Some that even the hardcore crowd are probably unaware of. I’m not the kind of guy who buys a collector’s edition just to have it sit on a mantle and never get touched, oh no. I buy something to enjoy it dammit. Although I have bought and kept collector’s editions of games I don’t really like but I have definitely played them all. Some were picked up because I pre-ordered in advance, some I was lucky to find in a second hand shop and others I had to fork out extra just to get a few related items along with the game. But not all collector’s editions are put together well and recently, a couple of collector’s editions really stood out to me and I thought it’d be interesting to reflect back on some of the great collector’s editions and some that were not limited enough.

The typical limited edition will come with a “making of” dvd and usually packaged in a different case with, maybe an art book. Some companies are renown for going a bit further when they put together their collector’s editions so let’s start with the big guns: Blizzard. Continue reading

Game Review: Dead Rising 2 (360, PS3, PC)

Zombies are awesome. Any situation you can think of can be made better with zombies in the mix. The popularity of zombies has only gotten bigger to the point where a common belief is that there will be a zombie apocalypse one day. Preposterous as this actually is, it has brought about some cool movies and games. One such game is Dead Rising. An early 360 game that had it’s fair share of awesomeness with a few set backs. It wouldn’t have taken much to make a near perfect game out of what was already there. So when they said they were making a sequel, I started polishin’ my chainsaw.

Dead Rising 2 is just like the 1st : a third person zombie fest where anything that isn’t nailed down, and even some that are, can be used as a weapon while you go about the main story. The big “twist”, so to speak, is that the zombies are not your main concern. It’s the normal people who are trying to capitalise on this crazy situation who tend to be the the bigger villains. The zombies are there mainly because, as we proved earlier, zombies are awesome, but they also make a great obstacle. Not just because they want to eat your brains but because using your imagination to dispatch the undead can be so much fun that you forget about saving the hapless survivors in time. Sneaky buggers!
