Geek Actually After Show Ep103 – Sweet Sue’s Canned Whole Chicken

Hosted by: David McVay, Josh Philpott, Shane Gregory and the Geek Actually Chatroom

Welcome to the Geek Actually After Show. This un-stuctured and un-planned podcast is what what you get after we finish recording the two main shows Tech Actually and Film Actually. We basically just leave the mics on and record whatever we feel like talking about. This show gives us a chance to talk about anything that didn’t fit into the format of the main shows.

The Geek Actually After Show is recorded live on Saturdays around 2.30pm (AEST UTC+10). Go to geekactually.com/live to watch it live.

Review – Resident Evil: After Life

I would love to start this review by saying that video game movies have come a long way over the years, but any geek will tell you that that is a great stinking lie. As a huge gamer it is such a shame to watch director after director destroy the essence of what was, within it’s art form, a good story. Now in saying that, I will also admit that video game stories are MADE for video games. So I also have to make it clear to fan boys that you cannot just pull most stories from a game. What’s more, you can’t slap real actors into a third person camera and away you go… This is where directors and writers fill the gaps (or don’t as history has proven).

Now let’s talk Resident Evil. Paul W. S. Anderson set out to bring one of the most revered horror series of all time to the big screen and for once we were given a glimmer of hope. Was it true to the story? No. Was it a shining achievement of cinema? Not even close. What it did do was entertain us and use enough references to make fans of the series happy. Continue reading

Film Actually Ep011 (103) – Embedded in Our Souls

Hosts: David McVay, Josh Philpott & Shane Gregory

Welcome to the Film Actually podcast, your weekly dose of movie geek. Film Actually is the official movie podcast of geekactually.com.

This week David McVay and Josh Philpott are joined by Tech Actually regular Shane Gregory for a review of, ‘Buried’ starring Ryan Reynolds in a box. We also have some Entertainment Buzz including the new trailer for Danny Boyle’s ‘127 Hours’ and the full trailer for ‘True Grit’ and this week’s Lists of Five is five claustrophobic films. Shane Gregory is our regular co-host on Tech Actually and the tech guy for DLC Live every Tuesday at rawDLC.com.

*Update 12/11/2011 – Film Actually was a split off from the main Geek Actually show and originally maintained numbering continuity with that show. That logic no longer works as the shows have become two unique entities, so we have gone back and re-numbered the Film Actually shows to reflect their true episode number. This show is now officially episode 11 but when you listen to the show you will hear it referred to as episode 103, this is why. Sorry about any confusion or inconvenience.

Film Actually is recorded live every Saturday at approximately 1.15pm (AEST UTC +10) at geekactually.com/live

This is the official tech podcast of geekactually.com. The tech show by geeks for geeks and non-geeks. Accessible tech for everyone is the motto we live by. This week on Tech Actually we take a look at the latest news about the Australian National Broadband Network, examine the facts vs. the theory of Stuxnet and with the help of some listener feedback we continue to build up evidence of the impending robot apocalypse. REPLAY – Geek Actually Live Shows for October 9th

Here are this week’s live shows presented in the same order that we recorded them. We start with Tech Actually then Film Actually and end the day with the After Show.

Because the show is live, you get it here with all the mistakes intact. Check the individual audio show posts for the show notes. This week in Tech Actually, David and Josh are joined by the returning Shane to discuss the week’s news including the latest on the National Broadband Network, the theory vs. the facts of Stuxnet and the new Halo movie news. In Film Actually David, Josh and Shane review ‘Buried’ starring Ryan Reynolds, list our top claustrophobic films and watch the trailers for ‘127 Hours’ and ‘True Grit’. In this week’s Geek Actually After Show we start well discussing what we’ve been watching this week and the price difference between Australia and America for the collector’s edition of ‘Avatar’. However when we start discussing canned sandwiches and a chat room listener puts us on to canned whole chicken, all bets are off. I don’t think we ever recovered from that. Enjoy the shows. Avatar The Collector’s Edition Details

Those who listen to Film Actually regularly know that Josh and I have been boycotting the Blu-Ray release of James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’. This is not because we didn’t like the film, on the contrary, we thought it was the film event of the year. We have been boycotting the vanilla release that came out a few months ago because we knew that an extended cut with bonus features was coming and I, for one, wasn’t about to pay twice. The reason I bring this up is that the collector’s edition now has a) a release date and b) details announced. Now all the details I’m about to discuss are for the Blu-Ray release because that is all I am interested in (and all true movie buffs should be heading to this format), all you DVD users should know that most of the details are the same but check your retailer for full details. A trailer for the collectors edition has also been released and you can watch that below.

Now that the trailer has you excited, here is what you can expect on your 3 disc collector’s edition Blu-Ray: Continue reading
