Tech Actually Ep100 – The Impending Robot Apocalypse

Hosts: David McVay & Josh Philpott

This is the official tech podcast of geekactually.com. The tech show by geeks for geeks and non-geeks. Accessible tech for everyone is the motto we live by. This week on Tech Actually we discuss all the evidence building up that will lead us to ‘The Impending Robot Apocalypse’. This is all done in fun of course, but the evidence is pretty compelling.

Tech Actually is recorded live on Saturdays at 12pm (AEST UTC+10). Go to geekactually.com/live to watch it live. Your show notes follow: Continue reading

Film Actually Ep008 (100) – Shyamalan

Hosts: David McVay, Josh Philpott & Dave Kozicki

Welcome to the Film Actually podcast, your weekly dose of movie geek. Film Actually is the official movie podcast of geekactually.com.

This week David McVay and Josh Philpott are joined Dave Kozicki for a pair of movie reviews. First up we take a look at Nicolas Cage in ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice’ and then we pull apart M. Night Shyamalan’s new film ‘The Last Airbender’. We also have a new List of Five, the listener requested 5 top techie movies.

*Update 14/10/2011 – Film Actually was a split off from the main Geek Actually show and originally maintained numbering continuity with that show. That logic no longer works as the shows have become two unique entities, so we have gone back and re-numbered the Film Actually shows to reflect their true episode number. This show is now officially episode 8 but when you listen to the show you will hear it referred to as episode 100, this is why. Sorry about any confusion or inconvenience.

Film Actually is recorded live every Saturday at approximately 1.15pm (AEST UTC +10) at geekactually.com/live

New iOS 4.1 HDR feature works very well

One of the key features of the new iOS 4.1 software for me was the new HDR (High Dynamic Range) camera mode. Mobile phone cameras are notoriously crappy and the iPhone is still just a phone. The iPhone’s camera is pretty good for what it is but it still really struggles with exposure.

HDR is a process of taking several identical shots (in the case of the iPhone, it is three) except with different exposure levels and then combining them to even out the detail levels across the whole shot. Example: you take a shot of a friend on the street on a bright sunny day, your friend is nicely exposed but the sky is completely blown out and white when to your naked eye it was lovely and blue. To create the HDR image you would have a photo that has the sky nicely exposed, another with your friend nicely exposed and then a third with the shadows nicely exposed. When combined you get all the detail across the three exposures combined into one shot. Continue reading

Trailer: HBO’s Game of Thrones

I am a huge fan of fantasy and ‘The Lord of the Rings’ is one of my favourite books and I was a huge Dungeons & Dragons player many years ago, so I get kind of excited when a big new fantasy product is heading our way. I am often disappointed. I went to see ‘The Golden Compass’, ‘Eragon’ and ‘Clash of the Titans’ all on their first weekends and was crushed each time. Fantasy is a very hard genre to pull off and I take my hat off to Peter Jackson for what he accomplished with ‘The Rings’ trilogy.

Why am I telling you all this? Simple, I can tell you in three words, Game-of-Thrones! George R. R. Martin’s fantasy epic is coming to the screen, this time via television, actually even better, this time via HBO. ‘Game of Thrones’ is the first book in a planned seven novel saga (four are out so far) called ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’. The plan for the series is to have each season be one of the novels, interesting plan. George R. R. Martin better pull his finger out and finish the books or the series might just catch up to him. Joaquin Phoenix to return to Letterman

Okay we have been talking about Mr. Phoenix a lot on the shows since the teaser for his new “documentary” ‘I’m Still Here’ came out a couple of weeks ago.

One of the main topics of conversation has been about his infamous appearance on Letterman last year, was it for real or was it a put on? The answer to that question may soon be answered, Joaquin Phoenix is returning to Late Night with David Letterman late this month.

The reason for his appearance, to promote the new “documentary” of course. Why do I keep putting the word “documentary” in quotes? Because we still don’t have a firm answer to the one simple question, is it real or is it a mocumentary? I’m hoping we will find out later this month.

If you have never seen the infamous appearance, go here to watch it and the teaser for the new film.
