Game Review: Silent Hill Shattered Memories

I do love a game that can scare the shit out of me. It means the game makers have captured my imagination and found a way to make me invest my emotions in their character while sending me through whatever situations they have conjoured up in their evil minds. It requires delicate detail to graphics, sound and control but is mastered by taking these away from you also. It’s a great quality but quite rare. Resident Evil used to have it. Project Zero (or Fatal Frame depending on where you are in the world) had it in bucket loads. Dead Space brought the love of fear to high definition and Silent Hill, many years before, proved that terror, true terror, could exist in a digital format.

After many sequels, with them getting unanimously worse as time goes on (with exception to the absolute masterpiece that is Silent Hill 2), especially since developement has left Japan, the series has gotten somewhat stale. Ultimately, the true appreciation for this new game will come from knowing just how bad it could have been. Or should have been. Continue reading

Film Actually Ep003 (095) – Guilty Pleasures

Hosts: David McVay & Josh Philpott

Welcome to the Film Actually podcast, your weekly dose of movie geek. Film Actually is the official movie podcast of geekactually.com. This week David McVay and Josh Philpott review two films, one in cinemas and one on DVD/Blu-Ray. First up is Roman Polanski’s new political thriller ‘The Ghost Writer’ and later in the show we review the political comedy ‘In The Loop’ which is available on Blu-Ray and DVD. We also have new trailers, our entertainment buzz section and out new Lists of Five.

*Update 14/10/2011 – Film Actually was a split off from the main Geek Actually show and originally maintained numbering continuity with that show. That logic no longer works as the shows have become two unique entities, so we have gone back and re-numbered the Film Actually shows to reflect their true episode number. This show is now officially episode 3 but when you listen to the show you will hear it referred to as episode 95, this is why. Sorry about any confusion or inconvenience.

Film Actually is recorded live every Saturday at 1.15pm (AEST UTC +10) at geekactually.com/live

Zack Snyder, director of Watchmen and 300, has directed this whacked out looking fantasy film. The trailer debuted at Comic-Con and is now online. Let me know what you think in the comments below. I’m interested.

Geek Actually After Show Ep094 – Oh Armond

Hosted by: David McVay, Josh Philpott & Shane Gregory

Welcome to the Geek Actually After Show. This un-stuctured and un-planned podcast is what what you get after we finish recording the two main shows Tech Actually and Film Actually. We basically just leave the mics on and record whatever we feel like talking about. This show gives us a chance to talk about anything that didn’t fit into the format of the main shows.

This week we discuss the New York Post’s film critic Armond White, take a look at a couple of trailers that we ran out of time for in Film Actually and discuss the Greater Union cinema’s lack of choc top ice creams.

Some Links of things we discussed: Continue reading
