Geek Actually Episode 43 – Electro Shock Therapy

Geek ActuallyDavid McVay is joined by Josh Philpott and Nicholas McVay

Recorded live on Ustream. We tried to get Ben Straw of Ben’s Tech Show on to the show this week but we had Skype issues. David has recovered from his sickness and talks a little about his Michael Bay and Renny Harlin experiences.

Tech News This Week: The new “Censordyne” protest ad has been denied screenings on Qantas airlines and GetUp.org.au (the makers of the ad) are being sued by a toothpaste company. Stephen Conroy wins Internet Villain of the Year Award, Google Chrome OS announced and Google removes it’s beta tags on their apps. Microsoft fires back by making a cloud version of Office for free and Bill Gates wants to control the weather. Lastly, China has removed electro shock therapy from web addict rehabilitation :-)

Film News This Week: Neil Patrick Harris will host the Emmy Awards (Legend-wait for it-dary!), Spongebob Squarepants turns 10, Ryan Reynolds is The Green Lantern, The Hughes Brother’s The Book of Eli, writer sues Lost (real or marketing?), Nicolas Cage wants to ‘re-conceive’ Ghost Rider and the Vatican approves of the new Harry Potter film.

For our feature review this week, we talk about “Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince”. Josh and David both loved the film and felt that it was one of the best of the series. Caution for those who have not read the book, we do go into a spoiler zone at the end. Nicholas ‘The Little Geek’ McVay wanders into the studio to give his feelings on the latest Harry Potter as well.

As always this episode carries an explicit tag due to small amounts of bad language.

Censordyne – New Campaign Against Internet Censorship – Brilliant

Just a quick add on to last weeks show on Net Censorship here in Australia. Getup.org.au has launched a new campaign against the censorship issue which includes a brilliant TV ad. CLICK HERE to go to the campaign site (which is a great parody) and watch the ad below.

This is a brilliant campaign and they want to get the ad screening on all Qantas flights into Canberra on the first sitting week of Parliament so all of the Ministers and their staff have to watch it. Great stuff.

Tell us what you think of this new campaign, does it work for you?

District 9 Trailer Online

Just when I was losing hope that we could make an original film, I caught this trailer and breathed a sigh of relief. There is still creativity left in the film industry. Actually, I think there is a lot creativity left in the film industry, sometimes I just lose heart when we get announcements like Asteroids, View Master and Personal Security. Anyway, here is the trailer, I hope you get the same flush of excitement that I got from it.

The film is produced by Peter Jackson and directed by Niell Blomkamp and is due for release in America in August.

Next Episode Delayed Due to Illness

Hi everyone,

Just a quick note to let you all know that I have been very sick for the last 4 days and although I am on the mend, I am still a little shaky so I am making an executive decision and I am going to postpone this weeks show.

I really didn’t want to cancel this week because we are now going out live but I really want to deliver the best show we can and this week I wouldn’t be 100%.

So please join us on the 18th of July for the next episode. We will be reviewing the new Harry Potter movie.

Regards,

David

Geek Actually Episode 42 – Censorship Gone Mad

Geek ActuallyDavid McVay is joined by Josh Philpott and special guest Ben Straw

Recorded live on Ustream. David and Josh are joined by Ben Straw of Ben’s Tech Show. This week we discuss the latest news on the Australian Internet Filter that now wants to expand to online gaming.

We move to film news which includes Hollywood wanting to make films based on Asteroids (the 1979 video game) and View-Master (the 1970s-1980s slide viewer toy). We also discuss Rian Johnson’s first film, Brick.

For or feature review this week, we respond to a listener request and review Waltz with Bashir, the 2008 animated documentary. This is a brilliant piece of cinema and loved by all.
