Game News: Tekken 6 Dated!

Tekken 6FINALLY! well the wait is now almost over for fans of the massively popular 1 on 1 brawler. Tekken 6 is the first title to hit this generation of consoles (not counting ps3’s download version of tekken 5) and has been eagerly anticipated following its release into arcades in late 2007 (Jap).

Now, almost two years on we have finally been given a date *drum roll* October 27, 2009.

The console version boasts 2 new people not seen in the arcade version, plus the usual story mode, a rumoured “Force style” mode similar to the ones seen in 3 and 4. For major fans there is a collectors edition announced ($149) which will include an art book and a wireless fight stick and is available on both xb360 and ps3. Unfortunately this has not been confirmed in Australia (or even a release date), oh well back waiting I guess.

New Trailer: 2012

A new trailer is up for Roland Emmerich’s new action packed extravaganza 2012. For those that haven’t been following this one, its another cookie cutter end of the world movie.. BUT you have to take Emmerich’s work with a grain of salt and remember that he is the king of blockbuster popcorn flicks. (previous work includes Independance day, Godzilla and Day after tomorrow) So in saying all of this, From a geeks point of view the trailer is epic in every way and I have to go as far as to say i am really excited about this one… hey, I’m a sucker for awesome CGI and this is nothing but that.

Check it out

Story will no doubt be simple but I’m sure due to what I have come to call “Pirates of the carribean syndrome” at the end we won’t remember anything due to overstimulation. so I’ll enjoy!

What do you think of it? let us know!

Fans Rejoice! Akira to remain unbutchered!

I’m sorry if anyone was actually excited about a live action remake of Akira because if you were, I have bad news.

It has been announced that the project is dead and gone.

Akira as a concept is one best left alone, Its very name for me defines anime and the film was so far ahead of its time and far out it would be lost on a Western audience.

Plus I dont know about you guys but the idea of Leonardo DiCaprio stepping into the shoes of Kaneda was just not.. good and the idea of then making it a two parts (considering it only ran for just over 2 hours) wasn’t sitting right with me.

So I’m ok with this development, Any comments?

Geek Actually Episode 40 – New Faces

Geek ActuallyDavid McVay is joined by Josh Philpott and Sarah Kalpokas

This week, something a little different.

David is joined by two brand new co-hosts and because this is the last audio only show we threw the rule book out the window and just had a chat about the the E3 computer game announcements. This is Josh’s speciality and his knowledge is vast. Sarah also shared her new passion for online gaming.

Josh and David then review the new comedy, The Hangover. Even though Josh confesses that he is not a huge comedy fan, this film was still received well by both. A funny film and on the strength of the trailer played on this show and the review, Sarah is now going to see it.

As always this episode carries an explicit tag due to small amounts of bad language.

Geek Actually Episode 39 – Thugs

Geek ActuallyDavid McVay is joined via Skype by Katrina Smith

David starts the show off with some house keeping, including feedback from lisanne624 (you can find out more about her at http://www.angloaddict.com) and Robert from Newcastle, who recently got published. Also, a reminder about the new podcast feed at https://geekactually.com/feed/podcast/ – remember if you subscribe through iTunes, do nothing, the feed has already been changed there. If you use any other reader, change your feed now.

Tech News: Wrapping up the WWDC keynote, Australian Aboriginal Children get the OLPC, Microsoft’s Bing overtakes Yahoo for search, Microsoft’s free anti-virus software and Lego makes a digital camera and MP3 player.

Katrina joins us via Skype for the rest of the show and we discuss entertainment.

Entertainment news: Futurama returns to TV, Abrams and Cruise return to Mission: Impossible for a fourth film, Liam Neeson might be Hannibal in The A-Team movie and Matthew Fox spills a few secrets about the final season of Lost.

Katrina and David also discuss follow up stories on David Carradine’s death and The Chaser’s blunder that were discussed on last week’s show. We also dig into Gordon Ramsay over his terrible behaviour while he has been here in Australia. His attacks on TV current affairs host Tracy Grimshaw and his lying about his mother. This leads us into talking about thuggish people.

Katrina reviews Night at the Museum 2 (apparently, we who live in Australia aren’t smart enough to get the whole title), she tells us that it is a fun diversion and, although won’t change the world, it is entertaining. David Reviews  I Love You Man and Sunshine Cleaning. I Love You Man is far better than the trailer would lead you to believe, carried on the strength of its two leading men it is a fun. This again is no Apatow film, but it passes the time very well. Sunshine Cleaning is a lovely, sweet drama/comedy that deals with family, loss and relationships in a grown up, mature way. It is touching and ultimately uplifting. It is highly recommended.

Geek Actually Episode 38 – McG Has Made a Friggin’ Liar Out of Me!

Geek ActuallyDavid McVay is joined in studio by Mirren Lee and Katrina Smith.

We have decided to skip the tech this week and have a film centric episode because of Apple’s impending announcements next week. Next weeks show will probably be very tech heavy.

We have a discussion about black humour and how The Chaser’s (an Australian comedy show) completely screwed up with it’s parody of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. We discuss David Carradine’s death and how badly it has been reported.

David and Katrina (with Mirren’s help, even though she hasn’t seen them) review the new film starring Russell Crowe, State of Play. We quite liked it, not perfect but a good throw back to films like All The President’s Men, Absence of Malice or Three Days of the Condor.

Then we tear into McG’s Terminator Salvation. This is a monumental mistake in almost every way. Spoiler Alert, we go into detail (as Katrina and I do) and discuss everything, including plot twists and the ending!
