Film Actually Ep069 – Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol

Hosts: David McVay, Josh Philpott & Richard Gray

For the next three weeks it is the silly season so Geek Actually is only putting out shorter episodes, consider this the holiday series. This week David , Josh and Richard review the new action blockbuster “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol”. Because of the shorter run time they don’t tackle news this week, instead they roll straight into the famous Lists of Five – Five Great Movie Stunt Scenes. Film Actually is the official movie podcast of geekactually.com.

NEW TRAILER: The Dark Knight Rises

Whoa! Check this out, the first real trailer for “The Dark Knight Rises”. I don’t think I really need to say anything else.

Eight years after The Dark Knight, the terrorist leader Bane arrives in Gotham City, pushing it and its police force to the limits, forcing its former hero Batman to resurface after taking the fall for Harvey Dent.

“The Dark Knight Rises” is directed by Christopher Nolan and stars Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Gary Oldman and Michael Caine.

Look for it in cinemas July 2012.

FIRST TRAILER & POSTER: The Expendables 2

This could be a lot of fun. As much as I felt that the first film was dumb, it was just a great big testosterone hit that was, in it’s own way, incredibly fun. Check out the trailer below and click the tumbnail image left for a hi-res look at the new poster.

The Expendables are back and this time it’s personal… Barney Ross (Stallone), Lee Christmas (Statham), Yin Yang (Li), Gunnar Jensen (Lundgren),Toll Road (Couture) and Hale Caesar (Crews) — with newest members Billy the Kid (Hemsworth) and Maggie (Yu Nan) aboard — are reunited when Mr. Church (Willis) enlists the Expendables to take on a seemingly simple job. The task looks like an easy paycheck for Barney and his band of old-school mercenaries. But when things go wrong and one of their own is viciously killed, the Expendables are compelled to seek revenge in hostile territory where the odds are stacked against them. Hell-bent on payback, the crew cuts a swath of destruction through opposing forces, wreaking havoc and shutting down an unexpected threat in the nick of time — six pounds of weapons-grade plutonium; enough to change the balance of power in the world. But that’s nothing compared to the justice they serve against the villainous adversary who savagely murdered their brother. That is done the Expendables way….

“The Expendables 2” is directed by Simon West and stars Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Chuck Norris, Liam Hemsworth, Bruce Willis, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. It hits cinemas in August 2012.

TRAILER: Jack the Giant Killer

Bryan Singer, director of “X-Men” and “The Usual Suspects”, is back with a fantasy epic. The current trend of adapting old fairy tales into big screen spectacles continues as Singer adapts Jack and the Beanstalk into a huge special effects extravaganza. I’m not sure if this is quite what I was expecting as I was hoping he was actually remaking the 1962 Nathan Juran film “Jack the Giant Killer” which was a childhood favourite of mine. Instead Singer seems to have made a literal adaptation of the classic fairytale about magic beans and a giant beanstalk. I guess we’ll see how this turns out in June 2012 when this film hits theatres.

“Jack the Giant Killer” tells the story of an ancient war that is reignited when a young farmhand unwittinglyopens a gateway between our world and a fearsome race of giants. Unleashed on the Earth for the first time in centuries, the giants strive to reclaim the land they once lost, forcing the young man, Jack, into the battle of his life to stop them. Fighting for a kingdom, its people, and the love of a brave princess, he comes face to face with the unstoppable warriors he thought only existed in legend–and gets the chance to become a legend himself.

“Jack the Giant Killer” is directed by Bryan Singer and stars Nicholas Hoult, Eleanor Tomlinson, Stanley Tucci, Ian McShane, Bill Nighy and Ewan McGregor.

TRAILER: Battleship

I’m just posting this because I said I would on Film Actually about two weeks ago, sorry I got busy. This is the second trailer for Peter Berg’s new Michael Bay film “Battleship”.

Peter Berg (Hancock) produces and directs Battleship, an epic-scaled action-adventure that unfolds across the seas, in the skies and over land as our planet fights for survival against a superior force. Inspired by Hasbro’s classic naval combat game, Battleship stars Taylor Kitsch as Lt. Alex Hopper, a Naval officer assigned to the USS John Paul Jones; Brooklyn Decker as Sam Shane, a physical therapist and Hopper’s fiancee; Alexander Skarsgard as Hopper’s older brother, Stone, Commanding Officer of the USS Sampson; Rihanna as Petty Officer Raikes, Hopper’s crewmate and a weapons specialist on the USS John Paul Jones; and international superstar Liam Neeson as Hopper and Stone’s superior (and Sam’s father), Admiral Shane.

If you must, you can see it in HD at Apple.

NEW TRAILER: Ghost Rider – Spirit of Vengeance

I’m not gonna lie, I kinda want to see this. I didn’t hate the first “Ghost Rider” movie, I felt it was very flawed but once he flamed on it was kinda fun. This sequel, now in the hands of “Crank” directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, just looks batshit insane and I can’t wait.

Former stuntman and bounty hunter of rogue demons Johnny Blaze has been living in self-imposed exile, believing that his powers are a curse. But when he is approached by a member of a monastic order who is looking for someone to protect a mother and her son, who are being pursued by the devil in the figure of a man named Roarke, the Ghost Rider takes the case.

“Ghost Rider – Spirit of Vengeance” is directed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor and stars Nicolas Cage, Idris Elba, Ciarán Hinds and Violante Placido. It opens in March 2012. And it is in 3D, all I can say to that is, why not!
