New “Cowboys & Aliens” Video and Posters

Okay it is no secret that we are pretty psyched for “Cowboys & Aliens” around here. Jon Favreau (director of the two Iron Man films) has adapted another comic book property and that is reason alone to see this film. But add to that Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford and the beautiful Olivia Wilde and I think we are in must see territory. What’s it about? I think the title says it all, cowboys fighting aliens! Talk about a high concept idea!

Well a new spot was released for the Spike Awards and it is pretty cool. It is pretty much along the same lines as the last trailer but there are a bunch of new scenes and shots we haven’t seen before. You can watch that clip at the bottom of this post, but before that Paramount Pictures Australia has also released two new one sheets for the film that are just hot. Click the thumbnails below to see the full size posters.

Now onto that clip. Continue reading

This week David and Josh review “Bridesmaids”. David tells us about his experience watching 20 minutes of “Transformers Dark of the Moon” in glorious 3D and Josh tells us about his interview with “Bridesmaids” director Paul Feig. They also take in some film news and trailers, plus deliver a brand new Lists of Five: Five Comedies with Soft Under Bellies. Film Actually is the official movie podcast of geekactually.com.

If you are an iTunes user, please leave a review. Your comments (good or bad) help us improve the show. This show carries an explicit tag due to infrequent coarse language.

Make sure you check out our other fine podcast Geek Actually for all your tech and geek culture needs.

*Update 31/07/2012 – Film Actually was a split off from the main Geek Actually show and originally maintained numbering continuity with that show. That logic no longer works as the shows have become two unique entities, so we have gone back and re-numbered the Film Actually shows to reflect their true episode number. This show is now officially episode 44 but when you listen to the show you will hear it referred to as episode 136, this is why. Sorry about any confusion or inconvenience.

Film Actually is recorded live every Saturday. Go to geekactually.com/live for the schedule and to watch it

Feature Film Review

‘Bridesmaids’ directed by Paul Feig and written by Kristin Wiig and Annie Mumolo. It stars Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ellie Kemper, Chris O’Dowd, Matt Lucas, Rebel Wilson and Jill Clayburgh.

Annie, is a maid of honor whose life unravels as she leads her best friend, Lillian, and a group of colorful bridesmaids on a wild ride down the road to matrimony. Annie’s life is a mess. But when she finds out her lifetime best friend is engaged, she simply must serve as Lillian’s maid of honor. Though lovelorn and broke, Annie bluffs her way through the expensive and bizarre rituals. With one chance to get it perfect, she’ll show Lillian and her bridesmaids just how far you’ll go for someone you love. – Source:  Anonymous on IMDB

Our Verdict: A great, sensitive and very funny comedy. Melissa McCarthy is a star in the making.

Lists of Five

This week our Lists of Five: Five Comedies with a Tender Under Bellies. “Bridesmaids” gave us the idea so we ran with it. The great comedies that last often have big hearts and a softer side, here are five of them.

Just a reminder, because we never like to just make things easy on ourselves, our lists are not necessarily top five lists, they are more or a less a list of film recommendations within the theme of the list.

Red Band Trailer: Conan The Barbarian

This is a film that I so want to like. I love the character, the books by Robert E. Howard were fun and I have loved the various comic book adaptations, but most of all I really loved the 1982 John Millius film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

All that being said I am just not feeling it with this version. I like Jason Mamoa in HBO’s “Throne of Games” and really believe he will be a perfect Conan. I like the way the film looks, and I really dig that they are pushing for a hard R release as this red band trailer shows. But I am still not excited and I think it comes down to remake-itis (a forming allergy to remakes – symptoms include depression and an irrational hatred of Hollywood) and terrible marketing. I know they are trying to engage the youth audience but the hard rock modern music just turns me off when it is married to images of sword and sorcery. I’m sure that the film will have a great big score and feel appropriate (at least I really hope it does) for the time period but that is not what they are selling.

Anyway, you can watch the red band trailer for “Conan The Barbarian” directed by Marcus Nispel below. The film opens in Australia on the 18th of August 2011.

What did you think? Comment below.

Trailer: The Muppets

Finally a full trailer for the new movie “The Muppets”. After three parody trailers they have finally given us a trailer that shows the story. I can’t wait to see this film.

“The Muppets” directed by James Bobin and written by Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller. It stars the Muppets, Jason Segel, Amy Adams, Emily Blunt and many, many others. It opens in November 2011.

Excited or not? Comment below.
