New Trailer: Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Paramount Pictures Australia has made a new trailer for “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” available. Wait, before you get too excited, this is just a re-cut of the previous trailer but it does contain a few new shots which is why I am posting it. The final shot of Optimus flying is pretty cool.

I can’t help myself, I am looking forward to this film even though the last one was such a turkey. I might be disappointed but I will be there on the first weekend.

Review: Super 8

Every now and again a film comes along and you know that you have just witnessed something special, “Super 8” is just such a film. In an era of sequels, superheroes and remakes, director J.J. Abrams has delivered something that is familiar, yet completely fresh.

In the summer of 1979, a group of kids witness, while shooting a scene for their Super 8 zombie movie, a terrible train accident. Bizarre things start happening in their small town and it soon dawns on them that something escaped from that train and the military want it back.

To say anything more about the plot would be an insult to Abrams, who has kept an amazing level of secrecy about this film and its plot. Abrams has said that he loves it when, like from his childhood, an audience discovers a film and I have to agree with him. There is a really neat feeling to seeing a movie that you know very little about. We tend to know a little too much about movies before going to see them these days, so an Abrams event is fun and unique. Continue reading

*Update 31/07/2012 – Film Actually was a split off from the main Geek Actually show and originally maintained numbering continuity with that show. That logic no longer works as the shows have become two unique entities, so we have gone back and re-numbered the Film Actually shows to reflect their true episode number. This show is now officially episode 42 but when you listen to the show you will hear it referred to as episode 134, this is why. Sorry about any confusion or inconvenience.

Film Actually is recorded live every Saturday. Go to geekactually.com/live for the schedule and to watch it

Your show notes:

Feature Film Review

‘X-Men First Class’ directed by Matthew Vaughn and written by Ashley Miller, Zack Stentz, Jane Goldman and Matthew Vaughn based on a story by Bryan Singer & Sheldon Turner and based on the Marvel Comics characters. It stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Kevin Bacon, Jennifer Lawrence, Rose Byrne, January Jones, Nicholas Hoult and Oliver Platt.

Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-MEN. – Source: 20th Century Fox

Our Verdict: A split panel this time. Richard and David thought it was an enjoyable, solid film that is missing the “wow” factor. Josh didn’t enjoy the film and placed it into the same category as “X-Men The Last Stand”. One thing we all agree on is that Michael Fassbender is a star and one to watch.

Lists of Five

This week our Lists of Five: Five Political Films. Listener Matt (listen to last week’s show) suggested this list and considering the slightly political nature of “X-Men First Class” we thought we’d do it this week. Matt, this list is for you.

Just a reminder, because we never like to just make things easy on ourselves, our lists are not necessarily top five lists, they are more or a less a list of film recommendations within the theme of the list.
