Game Review: Super Mario Galaxy 2

We adult nintendo fans don’t have a lot to brag about to our playstation and xbox bretheren. But the few things we can brag about, really do hold a high quality that can not be denied by anyone. Zelda is one, Donkey Kong is another, Metroid is a heavyweight but leading the way is the ever awesome Mario.

Mario galaxy 2 is the latest from the fine folks at nintendo and like all major Mario titles, it’s platform gaming at it’s finest. Each level has a star to collect which opens up other levels to conquer on the world map. But, as I myself pondered when it was on it’s way : is Mario Galaxy 2 any different from Mario Galaxy 1?

Ultimately the short answer is no, with exception to a few new ability mushrooms and, of course, Yoshi, but more on him later. MG2 can, at times, feel like a really big expansion pack rather than a new game of it’s own which could be a large chunk of the reason why the title is one of the few numbered sequels in the Mario catalogue. But, you know what? Who cares! Mario Galaxy 1 was a brilliant game and, in my eyes, the true successor to one of the best games ever made, Mario 64. Continue reading

Geek Actually Episode 91 After Show – Smurf It

Hosted by: David McVay, Josh Philpott and Celine Roberts

Welcome to the Geek Actually Podcast After Show, the show were we just leave the mics on and record whatever we feel like talking about. This show gives us a chance to talk about anything that didn’t fit into the format of the main show. If this is your first experience with the Geek Actually Podcast, stop! This is not an actual show, it is the random ramblings of a bunch of geeks. Go listen to the main show first then come back to us. The Geek Actually Podcast and After Show are recorded live on Ustream.

This week we ramble on about the cold and buying a heater, oh yeah, we also talk geek stuff like an ‘Infamous 2’ trailer and the career highs and lows (and there are a lot of lows) of M. Night Shyamalan. We also take a look at the teaser trailer for the new ‘Smurfs’ movie. Our reaction really comes down to, why? Watch the trailer here. Continue reading

Trailer: The Smurfs

The only reason I am posting this trailer (or teaser) is because we talked about it on the latest After Show (ep 091) and I promised I would put it up. So here it is. ‘The Smurfs’ will be released in 2011. I can’t say I think much of the idea or the teaser at this time, maybe after I see more I might get more interested.

Geek Actually Replay – Geek Actually Episode 91 After Show Live Video

Here is this week’s live video version of The Geek Actually Podcast Episode 91 After Show – Smurf It. This week David McVay, Josh Philpott & Celine Roberts discuss the new Smurf’s movie trailer and the problem with M. Night Shyamalan. The audio podcast of this episode can be found on this site or on iTunes.

Almost every week we record the Geek Actually Podcast while feeding it live to Ustream. We record the Ustream feed and it is available go back and watch later if you want. It occurred to me that we should just embed the past shows here so you can find them easily. You never know, you’re listening to that podcast and something visual happens, now you can simply find the show here and watch what happened. Enjoy. (Note: We only started recording the feed as of episode 46, there are no videos of earlier shows.)

Photos from Supanova Sydney 2010

Here are the promised photos from Supanova (Sydney) 2010. It is just a small random grouping of images from the geekiest place on earth. We had a lot of fun at the expo and I hope you have fun looking through these images. Many of the images can be explained by watching the video clips we also shot. Other shots are just fans in costumes or the crowds or just us at the expo.

Forgotten Films: Videodrome (1983)

Videodrome (1983)

Videodrome

Director:
David Cronenberg

Writer:
David Cronenberg

Actors:
James Woods, Sonja Smits, Deborah Harry, Peter Dvorsky, Leslie Carlson, Jack Creley

Plot:
Max Renn (James Woods) is a sleazy cable TV producer who discovers a snuff broadcast called “Videodrome” while researching new show ideas. Videodrome turns out to be real footage and when Max’s girlfriend goes missing while looking for the shows source, he must fight his way through his own mind to find the truth behind the bizzare video transmissions.

Opinion:
When watching any movie made by David Cronenberg, you have to expect bizzare. The film has a decent story and the general feel of the film (although ridiculously dated) still manages to get its message through… IF you can imagine a world where videotapes are sent like emails and broadcast TV is like the internet.
