Mac Users Rejoice – Steam Public Beta Released with Free Portal

Steam, Valve’s online gaming service, is now available for Macintosh computers. The public beta was released today and Valve is considering the Mac a tier 1 Platform. Tier 1 means that Valve games (Half-Life, Left 4 Dead etc.) will be released on both platforms (PC and Mac) simultaneously. Currently Valve only has Portal and Team Fortress available from their catalogue. There are only a few Mac titles available for the beta but this should change quickly.

The big news for gamers is that until May 24th, Valve’s game Portal is free for both PC and Mac! So grab a copy of Steam for Mac and make your first game this excellent puzzle game from Valve.

Below is a list of games currently available for Mac through Steam. Steam will be completely platform agnostic. If you purchase a game (either on PC or Mac), you can download both versions. I already owned the PC version of Torchlight, and I just pulled the Mac version today, no drama. Continue reading

Short Film: The Secret Mission of the Terminator – Funny Stuff

This amusing little film is for all the Apple vs. Windows people out there. I wasn’t sure were it was going but the pay off is very funny. The visual effects by this very talented Chinese filmmaker are top notch.

Jane Goldman Re-Writing ‘X-Men: First Class’

Things are looking up for the new X-Men film, ‘X-Men: First Class’. First we learned that Matthew Vaughn (‘Kick-Ass’, ‘Stardust’ and ‘Layer Cake’) was hired to direct the new film, now he has hired ‘Kick-Ass’ writer Jane Goldman to re-write the script. Ms. Goldman is a fantastic writer, who also worked with Vaughn on ‘Stardust’, and she should be able to bring a fresh take to this tired franchise.

Before screenwriting Jane Goldman had worked in the British television industry and wrote books. She has written fiction and non-fiction including the novel ‘Dreamworld’ and the X-Files companion book ‘The X-Files: Book of the Unexplained’. She was also a staff writer for ‘Zero’, a computer game magazine. She has also written several non-fiction books for teens. Continue reading

Trailer: J. J. Abrams’ Super 8

J. J. Abrams (‘Mission: Impossible 3’, ‘Star Trek’ and TV’s ‘Alias’ and ‘Lost’) loves secrecy and his latest film, ‘Super 8’, is no different. The film was shot is secret and the trailer was delivers in a locked case (or so the story goes). Now it is online and you can see it below.

So what do we know (or think we know)? According to /Film it is written and directed by J. J. Abrams and produced by Steven Spielberg. It is NOT a sequel to ‘Cloverfield’ and it will be released through Amblin NOT Dreamworks. It is set in 1979 and is an homage to Spielberg films from his 70’s/80’s  period like ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’ and ‘E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial’. Other than that, it is a bit of a mystery. Continue reading

This week we talk about fan films and the real, but insane, ‘Titanic II”.We also review the new Werner Herzog film ‘Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans’ starring Nicolas Cage on Blu-Ray and DVD.
