Australian’s Denied Jennifer’s Body

Jennifer's BodyIt has just come to my attention that the new Diablo Cody scripted horror film ‘Jennifer’s Body’ starring Megan Fox is not going to get a release in Australian cinemas. An article in the Sunday Herald today states that 20th Century Fox has decided to not release the film in Australian cinemas because is was a financial failure in the United States.

I quite frankly think this is crap considering the film cost $16 million (US) to make and according to Box Office Mojo, it took $16 million (US) at the US box office, not a stellar take but it has at least covered costs. It is still being opened in foreign markets (it opens in the UK this week) and all the money made now would be heading towards profit. It has already made another $2 million (US) in overseas dollars. It does not make sense that they wouldn’t try and recoup as much money as possible. It would not be the first time that an American movie made more money outside of the US, just look at the box office take for any of the modern Woody Allen movies.

So what is the real reason? I don’t know. But I can say that Fox has messed things up again because rather than save money on holding back the release, they will now lose money from people looking for pirate copies.

Geek Actually Episode 58 – Trick or Treat

New Geek Actually Cover ArtHosts: David McVay, Josh Philpott and Dave Kozicki

The Geek Actually Podcast is recorded live on Ustream with chat interaction.

It’s Halloween again and along with our news and opinions we throw in a little spooky fun. A late start due to technical malfunctions (could it be gremlins in the machines?) but the show finally got rolling. After a huge mail bag we moved into…

Game News This Week: A new Nintendo DSi (called a DSi LL) with a larger form factor and game censorship, again.

The Great Internet Tech War of 2009: An article on CNet would indicate that we are not the only ones that think a war is going on, they think Google might be winning.

Tech News This Week: Microsoft pulls it’s support for the ‘Family Guy’ special that they commisioned, Stephen Conroy screws up again and Mitsubishi develops odour eating car seats.

Entertainment News This Week: The new ‘Avatar’ trailer is here and we delve into our thoughts and opinions on what we will get with James Cameron’s new film, the ‘Alien’ Prequel might not be what we had hopes for and Netflix comes to PS3 and Wii. We also throw in a retro review for Halloween of the horror film ‘Dog Soldiers’, rent it now it is lots of fun.

Our Feature Review: For our feature review this week we tackle Terry Gilliam’s new film ‘The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus’. Like all of Gilliam’s films, it sparks conversation. Josh and David M. quite liked it, Dave K. is still processing it.

This episode carries an explicit tag due to infrequent coarse language.

A Different Twist on the Mac Vs PC Debate

Little Geek just pointed this new Lego animation to me and it appealed to the computer geek in me. Enjoy.

Half Life: Escape From City 17 – Part One

On this weeks episode of The Geek Actually Podcast (episode 58) we discussed this short film by the Purchase Brothers. The film is called ‘Half Life: Escape from City 17 Part 1’ and is, quite frankly, brilliant. I hope they bring us Part 2 soon and I see features in their future. I want to thank listener Popshot for reminding me of this little gem.

Trick or Treat

On this weeks Geek Actually (episode 58)we played this little video of Nicholas ‘The Little Geek’ McVay’s to celebrate Halloween. I’m embedding it here for the audio listeners to watch.

Geek Actually Update – Feeds and Metrics

New Geek Actually Cover ArtHi, David McVay (Host of The Geek Actually Podcast) here, just a quick note about our feeds and metrics. We need your help so I want to ask you a favour. I would like to streamline all the feeds so we can get some accurate metrics on the podcasts. Now I know we changed the feed a few months ago and I promised that was the last feed change, but then we got the whacky idea to start a second show (Platforms) and it has kinda screwed up all of our statistics gathering.

NOTE: If you download your podcasts through the iTunes store, do nothing, it has all been changed there automatically.

Okay, if you are still reading then you a) use a feed reader, other than iTunes, to get your podcasts and b) want to help us out.

We currently have a few feeds running on our site and they all work, however we only track show statistics on two of them, so let’s see if we can streamline this a bit. If you just used the general feed from the geekactually.com (feed://geekactually.com/feed/rss/) front page or you use the podcast feed (https://geekactually.com/feed/podcast/) they both work (and will go on working for the time being) and you have been getting both podcasts okay. However we don’t track the stats on these feeds.

The big favour we would ask of you, could you please change your podcast feeds to:

The Geek Actually Podcast – https://geekactually.com/category/podcast/feed/

The Platforms Podcast – https://geekactually.com/category/platforms/feed/

This change will not only let us track the podcasts better but gives us room to grow, we can add any number of new podcasts and the feeds won’t cross (so to speak).

Last thing, if you use a site to grab your podcasts other than iTunes or geekactually.com and they don’t have the new feed, drop me an email at info@geekactually.com and I will try to get it corrected.
